Downgraded by BA

We booked our avios point business class flights around about a year before our actual flight date for a special celebration holiday to the Bahamas.
My husband and I checked in for our return flight home from Bahamas, as the check in assistant handed back our tickets my husband luckily noticed there was no flight number on his ticket, he queried this only to be told he didn't actually have a seat on the flight at the moment as it was over booked.
We had to wait until we were at the gate before we actually knew if he was on the flight or not, thankfully they had a seat for him but had downgraded him.
We were given what we were told was a goodwill gesture at the gate, it was a cash card with a preloaded amount on it there were two figures on it £200 and £700 we didn't know until we had arrived home and inserted it in the card machine we had £200. We were told our refund would be processed and sent to us by a different department. We later received about £42.00 as our refund/compensation.
Has anyone else experienced this and have they had any luck in obtaining a better refund?

For a downgrade for a flight over 3.5k in length the 261/2004 compensation would be 75% of the Avios.
The immediate compensation handed by BA at the airport is meant to be additional rather than replace the refund of the ticket provided for in the Regulation.0 -
Make an explicit EU261 claim to BA.0
