At least, there are 2 people in the world looking out for me.

I chickened out getting the MSI board.
Flubit came back with £151.13 for i5-6500 and £75.59 for the Gigabyte board, so gone with those prices. :beer:Move along, nothing to see.0 -
It seems after all that I do need a proper psu.
I've been running the Antec 550W for a few days with no problems.
It's been fine running a Phenom 9950 with a 250GB ssd, a 500GB and a 160 GB conventional drives. Printers, external hard drives, taken it all in its stride.
I put all the new parts together, tested getting to the BIOS, all ok, then before I connected any hard drives I wanted to test it by booting from one of my rescue flash drives.
It loaded the menu, then rebooted in a loop.
I tried another one.... the same.
I started to panic, thinking about possible short circuits etc.
I fitted my standby Casecom 500w psu, it booted right up.
Guess the Antec doesn't supply enough power on one of it's connections?
I've installed Win 7 prior to eventually updating to 10, the pc is running at a blazing speed. :j
Psu prices all seem to have jumped up since Cisco001 recommended some.
p.s. the Antec is currently powering a NAS4Free machine with 5 spinning hard drives.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
I've been looking for a suitable psu, but can't find any deals.:(
I'm guessing 500/600W, also prefer at least semi modular.
New pc works fine, I just don't want to risk it by using the cheapo Casecom.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Antec HGC620M still £63 @ box.co.uk0

Antec HGC620M still £63 @ box.co.uk
Yup, I'd seen it was still there, tbh, it's a bit more than I was looking to pay, I was just hoping that something would pop up on HUKD.
I'm a bit wary of Corsair.
I had a Corsair CX500, but it didn't last as long as I felt it should have, power drops out after a couple of minutes.
If I connect it to my Thermaltake psu tester, the 'power good' light is not lit.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

I couldn't find any decent deals, so went for the Antec, which arrived today.
Decent service from Box, ordered at the weekend, processed Monday, delivered today.
One thing I've noticed with the motherboard, is that the Gigabyte bios splash screen defaults to the HDMI output.
The HDMI is connected to the tv, even with the tv off, I see nothing on my DVI screen until Win 7 appears. Pull HDMI out of tv, Gigabyte bios screen reappears.
So a couple of adapters are on their way, as I do not have HDMI on my monitor.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

corsair PSU's are generally pretty good, just avoid thier CX range, which are cheap budget ones. The original CX ones were better, but the current range are just awful
Although if you dont have a discrete gpu, then you really dont need much power, 350/400 should be plenty, especially if its a decent one. Personally i would go for a seasonic, but they tend to be abit pricey.
People do tend to overestimate the amount of power they need0 -
Hope you don't mind me chirping in on your thread Spud.
How did you get on with the Gigabyte board? Thinking of going down the same route shortly.
Cheers.0 -
