Used car from main dealer with new MOT brakes fail around 2700 miles later

  • I've always thought of the advisory as a "plan to get this done in the next 500 miles" although my wife's Mini had an advisory on brakes last year, and I ignored it, and at this years MOT we had a failure. There was about 1mm of friction material left, and I'm not proud of my tardiness. But that was 5000 miles. She drives like a nun, though.
8 brake pads and 4 discs and an afternoon on axle stands on the drive and it was all sorted.

I quite like doing brakes on a car. It's quite methodical and therapeutic for me. That is until you get a rounded off bolt or stuck calliper...

Again not ALL teenagers 'hoon' around - (I didn't) - he may have done 2 years or so ago as a new driver, but I am pretty sure that he doesn't now.
It may not be so much about his age as about his driving style.

I've known - advanced - drivers who have such good anticipation that they barely use their brakes, and probably get tens of thousands of miles on a set of pads. Equally, I've known "safe and slow" drivers who brake for every tiny change in the road direction, and probably wear out their brakes in no time.

It might be worthwhile accompanying him on a journey or two as his passenger and noting whether he uses his brakes excessively.

Not the dealers fault. Don't embarrass yourself by making an issue out of this.

I'm disappointed that some responses imply that ALL 19 year old boys are 'bad or mad' drivers, talk about stereotyping people. Would some of the responses have been different if it had been 59 year old?

Your not wrong there, a set of rear tyres barely lasts 8k with my wife driving.
    She is in her 40's.

Alignment could easily have been knocked out causing uneven wear

Heavy braking round town can wear brakes pads away quickly, not uncommon for a young driver to be heavier on the brakes than a more mature driver.

Tyres and brakes are not covered by a warranty.

A good idea to advise the driver about checking a car before a long journey, they have likely been borderline for weeks.

:rotfl: My wife got through three sets of rears in 27,000 miles.
