Moved out of rental property and lost manuals - do I have to pay?

Hi all,
I moved out of a rental property yesterday. Today my LL has contacted me to say that the manuals for the White goods have gone missing and it will cost approx £50 to replace them.
I don't mind paying if I have to, but can't most manuals be downloaded from the Internet these days for free? If not then I will pay, but don't really want to unless I have to. I have no idea where the manuals could have gone, but I had three relatives helping me move today so they could easily have been thrown away.

How about you offer to print out the manuals, bound them nicely and present them to the landlord?
If you've just moved yesterday and thrown them out are they still in the bin? I'd go rooting through the rubbish to find them.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

I tend to agree with you that manuals can indeed be downloaded....
As a LL I do this for each tenant change and place them in a file...whilst I would agree that there is a little hassle involved in replacing them if lost/damaged...I certainly wouldn't put the cost at £50
I guess a nominal charge for paper/ink could be made together with the cost of some plastic covers and a file ....but thats no where near your figure even if you added a cost for the time taken.
If I were you I may be inclined to let it go to a dispute.frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!
2017 toiletries challenge 179 out 145 in ...£18.64 spend0 -
£50 is clearly taking the pee.
Download & print them out.0 -
Second hand value of the white goods themselves might be around £50...0

Does the inventory list the manuals?0

you acknowledge you had them to start with so morally there is no question they need to be replaced - where do we draw the line otherwise - "Dear LL, I lost your house, do I have to pay?"
Obviously the LL has thought of a notational (inflated) figure for the time and inconvenience of replacing them so DIY then there cannot be an residual issue at hand can there.0 -
Offer to print them out (or phone the manufacturer for replacement ones) and see what the LL says.0

They were provided with the property.
You lost them.
You are responsible.
Whether £50 is the actual cost of replacing them (buying, or printing/binding + labour/admin) or is a reasonable amount is another matter.
Download and print them yourself.0 -
Let me make one thing clear for some posters: there is no issue around responsibility. I am well aware that it my issue to sort - that was never up for discussion.
To other posters: I will approach the landlord and make suggestions for replacing them myself. Many thanks for your help - it really is appreciated

Oh don't be so precious.
Print them off and job done. Although if they're pulling that one expect a fight to get the full deposit back.0
