Options
Hello hope someone here can advise got quite a whopper of a bill from npower. The bill is for 2700 quid, now i was paying my gas and leccy by direct debit so i never tracked it cause i knew it would always come out.but this bill landed so i went back and checked my bank statements and lo and behold 2 and a half years ago (feb 2014) npower stopped taking the payments.

I have since been on to them to find out what happened and they can see i never cancelled it,but cant tell me how or why they cancelled it their end. Well im now getting threatened that the amount will be sold to my local friendly baliff firm so here i am asking for advice where do i stand, they cancelled my gas and leccy bill no notice nothing and now demanding their money that they stopped taking.

To top it all i lost my job last month so i really dont know what money they wanna take.

Any advice greatly appreciated cheers

Scum are not a problem. Don't phone them and ban them from your property by letter. Regarding npower, its highly likely that they will have now blacklisted you at the credit reference agencies, so this should be your major concern. Obtain statutory reports from the agencies, and if npower have blacklisted you it's a case of demanding that they de-list you, and if they prove awkward about it you may need to seek legal advice.

Cheers gingerbob but being blacklisted is the least of my worries, this bill has just appeared outta nowhere, i assumed i was paying.

Do i have any chance of not paying because essentially this is npowers mistake?

If you haven't already done so, make a formal complaint to npower. It looks like they may have failed to follow the "Code of practice for accurate bills" http://www.energy-uk.org.uk/publication.html?task=file.download&id=4991 in which case you may not have to pay some of the money.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

You want to take note of the back billing code aka the Code of practice for accurate bills referred to above; specifically there is a 12 month limit on back billing by an energy supplier. It's possible that might apply in your case.

Citizens Advice has a template letter for your complaint.
