Assuming you were born and got married in England or Wales you can get official copies of birth and marriage certificates which I assume would be acceptable

    http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

A copy from GRO would have to be acceptable IMO, given the ages, , many would have lost or never had the original in their possession over the past 59 years

I've now spoken to them again. They side-stepped the question when asked if I could just apply over the phone and not send in the certificates.

However, they have now said they don't want my birth certificate - they brought my details up on computer and apparently this has previously been verified (although I don't know how or when).

They still want my marriage certificate and have very helpfully said that I can go along to my local Job Centre, ask them to copy the certificate and certify it and that will be acceptable.

    Am happy with that :j
  • If you need new copies of birth/marriage/death certificates these can be easily obtained from the BMD site online. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ And they are 'certified' copies which are acceptable in any government office.

May I just add this not free, 7.50 or 8.00 IIRC

That's why I'll be going to my local Job Centre for a certified copy ;)
  • Just sent ours to claim the pension via recorded delivery, and the pension service returned them promptly by the same method. If they had gone missing you can always get copies.

Try not to become a worryguts. I have just spent a week with my 85 year old ma in law, and she worries about absolutely every trivial thing, driving herself absolutely demented in the process. She is an example that I am determined NOT to copy ;-)

This is not advice - hopefully it's common sense..
  • I did some casual clerical work for DWP, and here is my opinion-
EVERY document /letter /form you send in should have at least your National Insurance number on it (they get mountains of post every day)
The first thing we did with certificates was photocopy, certify, then return by registered post.
Jobcentres will photocopy them, certify and forward on - again, just think of the difficulty of tracing people on the computer with just the maiden name on a birth or wedding certificate, so write on the NiNo (National Insurance No.)
A lot of the offices are becoming telephone only, and it is true that the computer already has a record of birthdate etc, but if asked then supply the document as it is you who will be waiting.
