Worst, worst case and you can't fix this, is you still don't need a new laptop, just get a new hard drive for £25 and reinstall your chosen OS from scratch0

Don't even necessarily need a new HDD. If there's a spare pendrive big enough to back up necessary data, just run a Linux LiveCD to save the data to pendrive, then reinstall Linux in the laptop using the same LiveCD (making sure to wipe/format the HDD as part of the process).

Have you changed the SSID, and, for safety sake, the user name and password to access the router controls?0
