KLM Damaged Luggage claim

Ok please can you guys give me some help as I have exhausted all the options I can think of.
In March I went to New York and on the return journey not only did I have a 3 hour delay at JFK we missed our connection flight in Amsterdam to Manchester.

On arrival in Manchester mine and a 4 others in our party had no bags. It turned out that our bags had mistakenly been flown to Dusseldorf. It also appeared that our baggage labels had been mixed up with my sister’s bag being labelled as mine and mine as hers.

Anyway, after contacting KLM frantically as mine was showing up as ‘untracked’ my bag arrived at 6pm on the Friday. It was in a disgusting state. So bad in fact that the guy who delivered it said he had to check my personal items weren’t in the back of his van!

The zips had been ripped off and a massive hole was at the bottom of the case. My clothes’ were soaking in an unknown substance and everything was a mess.

Worse came when I looked in my case and I noticed that my white gold diamond ring that I had packed in hold as my hands had swollen up was gone as were items I had bought on my trip. My good Valentino dress also in my hold was torn to shreds as it was stuck out the bottom of the bag and obviously dragged along the floor.

I contacted KLM immediately and was very upset and was advised to log a complaint which I did. The staff were terrible and were not very helpful. They refused to give me their names and every reply email had to be done by their server I assume to prevent me having a logged reply from my own mailbox.

Anyway they asked to provide receipts for the lost items and in the end said they would give me £100!!! They would not acknowledge the ring (please don’t tell me I should have had it on my person as I know that but put it away when I was there and as I don’t wear it always at home forgot I brought it). They would also not acknowledge the dress without a receipt.

My husband in 2008 bought me the ring as he’s no longer with us there is no receipt. I contacted the jeweller who obviously remembered us and he provided an evaluation of the ring and confirmation it had been bought from him. The airline company have refused this and want a receipt. My personal travel insurance won’t cover the ring as it was packed in my hold luggage.

The dress I have contacted Valentino but it was bought it two years ago again I have no receipt. Again it was a gift and again my husband is sadly no longer here to provide.

I have been tweeting KLM and pulling my hair out over this. I am so angry and upset at them and myself but I would appreciate any help you guys could give me.

    (

this will be the same stance from the airline and their conditions of carriage will confirm this
will your travel insurance cover the dress and other damage?...whatever KLM pay out will be limited to a maximum figure as laid down under Montreal or Warsaw convention so your insurance is likely to give a higher payment
