    2) Get private insurance for the excess - and no spank on my card.

So I suppose if I get the third party insurance I just rock up to the counter with documents for third party insurance and that is it?
As I (and Caz) already explained, If you decline that excess cover from Budget, they will need to block an amount on your card equivalent to the excess, in case you prang the car.

Budget will not be interested in your separately purchased excess cover documents, it's nothing to do with them. If you return the car with any damage they will take the excess amount from your card and you have to claim that back from your separate policy yourself.

Not everyone has 5k etc free on cards so if the difference between high price or no car - the high price seems attractive x

Well I have just had it confirmed by Budget Ireland, the costs of additional insurance are:

Excess: EUR16 per day or EUR1600 pre-auth on card.
    Windscreen: EUR 2.50 per day
Roadside Assistance: EUR 3.00 per day

So thats an additional EUR200 for a 9 day trip.

And guess what, they do not accept any other forms of insurance, so the idea of using one of the thir party insurance companies mentioned on this site is a non starter!

So it is BUdget's insurance or no insurance!!!!

There must be something legally wrong with that??!?!?!?!

It's only a non starter if you can't or don't want to take the pre-auth on your card. If you want to save money try reading more carefully the advice you have received.

    @eDicky

I must be thick ! What advice have I missed?

Now I understand the car hire process, as I was asking about the wrong product to state with. Getting CDW mixed up with additional Excess/roadside/windscreen insurance.

it is a non starter as I don't want to give pre-Auth therefore i have to take out Budget's insurance, which I don't want to do. Ad as they don't accept any a third parties insurance for Excess/Windscreen/roadside I am stuck and therefore not going to using Budget.

So please enlighten me, what have i missed :)

I think the penny has dropped...I don't tell the care hire company about my third party insurance. I just decline theirs... LEt them ring fence the money on a credit card. And if I dent the car, they take the money I claim the money back from the third party insurance...

    :)

So the final question that i am concerned about is I want to pay but car hire with Debit Card and use Credit card for Pre-auth is that ok? From the car hire point of view, I know I get more cover buying with Credit card....but I prefer to use Debit card only to buy

    Bravo!

From my own experience, the card you produce at the pick-up desk does not need to be the same one used to pay for the booking. But I never book direct with a hire firm (unless walk-in) so if you're booking direct with Budget perhaps you should check with them.

I'm also hiring a car through budget for 2 weeks in Germany in August. Their T&C are quite clear that debit cards are NOT accepted and this seems to be standard through all car rental companies. My T&C also say that the card they do the pre-authorisation on MUST be the same card that the rental was paid for on.

I've had the debate about CWD and excess insurance. I've not seen anywhere that as much as €5000 will be taken. The excess without their own policy is €1200 so this is the amount I'm expecting them to pre-authorise. I have taken a policy through insurance4carhire . com (as recommended by Telegrapgh travel supplement). This was a one off payment of about £50 (for uk and Europe only) and will repay any excess claimed by budget in case of an accident or damage. It is an annual policy and can be used as many times as you like as can be used for courtesy cars when mine is in for a service etc.

Like somebody else said, Budget won't care about this insurance as it is nothing to do with them. I am expecting them to try and tell me that it is not valid and try to sell me theirs but let's hope their English is better than my German!

I have spoken to AutocarEurope and they have confirmed that Ireland has somewhat more stricter rules on car hire than the rest of Europe/the world.

The EUR5000 is taken if you decline CWD, if your decline the additional ripe off insurances they 'ring fence' about EUR1300 on your credit card.

You cannot hire a car through BUdget.ie using a debit card.

I believe it is possible to pay for the Car Hire through websites with Debit Card, but impossible to use as Per-Auth. I am currently double checking this.

And I am also checking, if I can pay with one card Debit or Credit Card, then use a different Credit Card for the Pre-Auth element.

It is all a nonsense really, I am sure there is a place in the market for a car hire company to do away with all this complexity, and charge a single fee to include all elements.

I mean really does their insurance have a Eur1300 excess on a scratch, does their insurance really require them to take the full EUR1300 just to cover a scratch?

You can insist on a full invoice for the damage on the spot, rather than them taking the full excess. Though of course they can claim that it costs 1300€ to fix.

I'm not sure what it is that you are doing, but on doing a dummy booking, it is quite clear that basic CDW is included.
