Dyson cooling fan (or similar)

I was in my local curry's & was impressed by these Dyson cooling fans (last year). Was waiting on them coming on offer as they're quite dear but never seem to see it happen.

They seemed better than the other ones they had on display, but like i said ..... they're costly.

I don't mind (too much) paying if they're the bees knees but is there other stuff out there that is pretty close at a fraction of the price?

This heat is getting on my nerves so i'm in need of some sort of fan. Preferably not one that just moves the already warm air around the room.

Sticking with the Dyson ones for the minute - which one would you recommend? I've seen their prices so IF they are reliable units then i don't mind paying £300 if it can cool a decent sized room but i don't want to be getting into £4s, £5s & £600s+.

Yes i know it's a bit madness to be spending that sort of money on a fan but really, when i say i can't handle the heat...i can't handle the heat :(

A quick bit of research suggests they don't actually cool, they are fans.

Hmm. The Dyson salesman was talking balls then.

He showed us one of the fans & showed us you can set a temperature level on it & it'll cool until it got to that temperature. Something to that effect anyway.

I remember it being more than a case of - here, press this button & cold air will come out, until you turn it off. The End.

The fan will operate until the room is at that temperature, but the fan won't be doing any cooling, unless you can position the fan to bring in cooler air from outside - which you can do with a cheapy desk fan on the windowsill.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • Ahh i remembered one bit about what the guy said.

He mentioned that these fans actually give out cool air whereas your standard blade fan just moved the already warm air around the room.

    Sales pitch nonsense?

a fan does make you feel cooler, a ceiling fan might be better as bigger blades push more air about without having so spin at high speed and be noisy. I don't know how we'd sleep without a ceiling fan when it gets really hot, much cheaper to run than air con.

Oh and a Dyson fan is still a fan, the air coming out is the same temp as the air it drew in, if anything compressing it a bit as a fan does warms it slightly. The air flow speed makes you feel cooler, the air flow helps evaporate sweat from your skin and cool you.

  • I did think about one of those ceiling fans.

But the condition of our ceiling is not the best. I'd dare bet it's original 1930s whateverthehellitis.

Plus some genius decided to instead of positioning the light in the middle of the room, positioned it off towards one side, so it's probably 2/3s the way across instead of bang 1/2 way. I've seen some of the blades on those fans & it'd probably end up chopping our wall. lol.

Opening an upstairs window on one side of a house and a window or door downstairs on the other side of the house will cool a house down considerably. (Providing there are no closed doors between them)
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

If it gives out cool air, it's an air conditioner. If it is a fan, it just moves air; it doesn't "give out" anything.

I just like the pictures and the description:
8,000 BTU Air Conditioner with Cooling and dehumidifying functions
Low power consumption and very economical to run - A Rated
Great for homes, offices, caravans or boats - Up to 20m2
Simple to operate digital control panel
Compact and Portable design with castors for easy mobility
Why is this very important bit hidden at the bottom of the small print and not shown on any of 4 pictures, including the one with the 'unit' standing in the middle of the room?rolleyes.gif
1.5M hose and window kit supplied
    :rotfl:
And it's not just some 'hose'. It's a hose with 10cm+ diameter that has to stick out of the window.

That's why a really portable 'cooling fan' is a fiction even if it's Dyson.
