Speeding computer up?

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with 4gb ram. It was always super speedy until around 6 months ago, and now I can't open more than 5 tabs at once otherwise it takes 5 minutes to load the pages.
Running latest version of Chrome. I'm with BT Infinity 2 at 56mb/s. Run CCleaner once a week and have deleted all programs that I have no use for.
Any thoughts anyone? This is driving me mad!

4GB should be OK - what's the OS?
An SSD is a good general way of speeding up.
Have you cleared your web history?
Have you tried a different browser (eg. Firefox)?
Are you running a virus checker?
Is it downloading Windows 10 in the background?0 -
I'm running Windows 10. End all processes that I don't need but it keeps that stupid Cortana thing running in the background and that takes up loads.
Browsing history/cookies/temp web files are deleted every week when I run CCleaner. Run AVG in the background but also Malware Bytes manually once a week. Deleted Firefox but will try it again now, hopefully can import my bookmarks over.
It's annoying because my laptop used to run fine with all sorts of files and programs hanging around that I didn't need but now it's super slow and I've deleted all personal files off my laptop and all programs I don't use but it's like being back on dial up on Win 980 -
Maybe you will get a good response by asking here: Techie Stuff0

I used to have a pink Sony Vaio laptop and loved it until it started going slow too. When I switched it on in the mornings I would go and make myself a latte whilst it started up because it took so long! After trying everything to speed it up and failing, I decided to treat myself to a new laptop. When I went shopping, I didn't realise Sony Vaios are no longer available anymore!:TA big thanks to all who post and sprinkling lucky dust to all who enter :smileyhea0

I clear cookies and cache every night before I shut down.0

Anyone running Windows 10 - be aware that there is a VERY BIG update coming
Mine did it yesterday afternoon when I switched on my laptop - it took just over 90 mins to complete (and you can't use your device whilst it does it - as it does it at the boot up) - it is a complete new version of Windows 100 -
Tried another browser? I'm (now) a big Opera Browser fan after being a Chrome then Firefox user. Your bookmarks etc can be imported from Chrome. On my old laptop I found that even when Chrome was removed and reinstalled it still remained sluggish.
Quite liked the new Edge browser which runs fine on a workplace hi spec desktop pc but crashes and burns on my fairly new laptop.0 -

Oh I hate these forced updates, esp without a warning!!! Is the updated version better/any different? Can you go back to the previous version if you don't like it?:TA big thanks to all who post and sprinkling lucky dust to all who enter :smileyhea0
