Train cancelled, missed connection added 2 hours to journey rights?

I am not looking for massive compensation more that I had everything planned around my ticket, was a advance ticket where I had to change trains at one point, my first train was cancelled meaning I was 10 minutes late for my connection, I was told I had to get the next available train even though that wasn't direct and got in later than waiting a hour and getting next direct train.
So I got home almost 2 hours after originally planned.
There is a few points here, first is that if I got the train I eventually did get it would of been cheaper, and less busy. I have a disabled railcard and needed a table seat for room and ended up cramped into a normal seat (and grumpy passengers made it hard to even fit in it.
I know Virgin says if train is late you get part of the money back in vouchers but what if like what happened with me I booked with Virgin, the Virgin portion of the journey was on time (bar a few minutes) but another companies train in this case Northern was cancelled.
So I paid Virgin but Northern were the cancelled train?
To be honest I would be happy with the half fare back as that covers me getting a drink and snack whilst waiting even if vouchers, and I am a little angry at having paid more to get train back earlier as well.
What are my rights in this scenario?

It really is quite simple.
Claim the refund for your whole journey from Northern Rail.
