I have recently started working for Tesco, doing replenishment at night.
I applied for a part time vacancy stating 15 hours a week, which is 2 nights a week.
Now I find with this being a flexi contract that they are consistently asking me to work at least 4 nights a week.
I know they can ask me to do the extra hours with 24 hours notice but really, if I had wanted to do 30 hours plus every week, I would have applied for a full time job. I don't mind working extra hours once in a while but it's being every week so far. I am only officially contracted for 15 hours but I am regularly doing at least double that.
If I refuse to do the extra hours consistently, my contract says it could lead to dismissal. Also, I am only a temp.
I am having to do 6 nights in a row this week with only one day off after and I have to get a taxi there and back sometimes because for example on Sundays there are no buses and it's too far to walk (especially after a night shift with sore feet).
Can I refuse next time to do all the extra hours they ask me and do only some of them?. Flexibility should work both ways I think.

Less than 2 years service and you have pretty much zero rights.0

That sounds horrendous. Have you spoken to management about it?Interest rate 1.25%, offset mortgage Woolwich0

I work in a warehouse for a large supermarket. Right now its busy. Lots of overtime available and agency workers getting asked to stay on most days. A month ago the same agency workers were all moaning about short time. This is the nature of retail. Any flexible retail contract is flexible pretty much one way. You need to live with it or change jobs.

On your last thread you wanted as many hours as possible as you needed the money.
What's changed?

Horrendous, really?0 -
You can refuse the extra hours and they can refuse to offer you ANY hours at all.
As you can figure out...it's a one way street.
You either like it or you don't. I would negotiate with management and refuse to do all the hours but accept some of the hours so it looks like you're willing to do something.
There's plenty more unskilled workers more than willing to do the hours you're not willing to do.
I personally always refuse the extra hours and I am still regularly offered work. It depends on how desperate they are. You will not be the first person they call upon should they need someone in future.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Maybe you should buy a bike then you won't have to waste money on paying for taxis.
Plus is there any reason why you don't want to work more than 15 hours a week especially as pmlindyloo pointed out in your other thread you wanted all the hours under the sun to get some extra money.0 -
Ugh ask for the day shift, it seems that pattern can't give people the hours wanted and that's whether you were there for 2 or 12 years, but still nothing would dare get said to someone who for 12 years solid, refused to help themselves by refusal ever of working a night shift and oh played the hard done by card nonetheless and and so the stick you are receiving is particularly harsh, perhaps that's why there is so much angst at T : (0

I'm sorry that makes no sense at all.0
