API changes?

Hi, I have had a search or two but cannot find the answer, so is anyone better informed that can?
My holiday booking tells me I need to enter API before flying with Thomas Cook Airlines (I know maybe not a good choice..) but their web site says no longer needed for certain destinations (including mine in Europe).
I guess the airlines site is the definitive one, but am I correct. First time I have been told recently that API is not required and thinking about it how will they know my passport details as I have not entered them. Is is just a wider implementation of the 'ticketless' society and useless online check in?

Their website is a bit misleading. API is needed, but what they mean is they don't need it in advance. They collect it either at OLCI, or at the airport if you check in there.0
