Despite looking at photos on the web I cannot be sure what mass of herbs I have, not sure if it is basil or oregano, is there an easy way to know if you are not familiar?
I know the obvious ones like mint, sage rosemary etc but never grown basil or oregano before and the herb plot is full of something unknown?

For Basil, it is not hardy, you could pop into a supermarket and sniff a pot of basil, very distinctive glossy leaves
Oregano, new one on me, I may have bought a pot an unnamed pot of it reduced to 20p last weekend, still trying to identify it 100%Eight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
Basil has largeish, bright green supple leaves. Oregano is has small coarser leaves more like thyme.
If you google images of basil and oregano 'in pot' it will give you a better idea of the difference in leaf size than just images of the leaves with no point of reference, they're very different.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
If you touch or pinch basil the odour is unmistakeable.0

Squish a leaf. Basil has quite delicate, moist leaves that smell almost mint-like (to me
). Oregano has thicker leaves that almost feel a little 'fuzzy', and the smell will remind you of pizza!

If it is growing in this country, surely if it is a perennial it is oregano (are there any old stems from last year, even if cut off). Basil, as Farway says above, isn't hardy. But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

It won't be basil, but it might be marjoram.....
Now, that's helped a lot, hasn't it?:rotfl:

Post up a picture. It wont be basil unless you've sown any this year. Could be something else though. Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.

yeah, i would just goto the supermarket and buy a bunch of herbs (1), and then compare the smell.
i haven't grown oregano (don't really like it too much), but basil grows with a succulent main stem, big succulent glossy leaves, in a formation a bit like a sunflower.0 -
My local supermarkets regularly have pots of basil - just pull a leaf off and sniff!
I've not seen a pot of marjoram though - that would be nifty to have.0
