Legal car driving is becoming like house buying; out of reach for most youngsters.

My daughter did loads of quotes a few months ago and they were all pretty much the same. She tried Corsas, Clios, Fiestas, Fiat 500 and Picanto. The Fiat 500 was the most expensive.

Hyundai and Kia's etc were expensive for my daughter. Cars over 10 years old tended to push the prices up. Except some older 60's and 70's cars. they were the cheapest.

Many years ago, when I was a student, the insurance was largely based on the value and speed of the car.

So you could buy a tatty old banger and insure it for peanuts.

Now, the insurance companies don't really care what your car's worth - they care about the claims that will be made when you crash into somebody else.

So the cars typically driven by "boy racers" are the worst ones to try to insure.

The insurance company would prefer to insure a car that you are going to look after, and not drive like an idiot. Either something new, or a genuine classic car.

The best example I saw on TV some while back was a young guy who had bought a vintage tractor. Not the most practical of everyday transport, bit dirt-cheap to insure.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Add older family to your insurance. On my previous punto -

My mum bought it down about £70 and my brother in law another £50 or so. it can't be people who are never going drive the car - so I didn't think to add the queen and they both gave permission. Also neither has any accidents recorded.

I sat for hours adding different people in different combinations - for me this was the best combo I also tried my step dad and brother one had speeding points and the other claims for insurance. also fully comp was way cheaper then third party.

Try quotes for Honda Jazz. Mostly driven by older motorists. Also if you can get an experienced driver on your policy that will bring it down a bit.

And they cant go over 40mph...

This is the key to new-driver insurance, for sure.

Paying out to replace your £500 Corsa is the least of their worries. It's the bus queue of nuns holding baskets of kittens that they really fear.
