1st Time Drivers
Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone can help me out. I'm 23 and have just passed my test. I've looked at buying a car second hand and also looked at finance deals.
I'm stuck though because with an older car I've been getting insurance quotes of around £3,500 and with a newer car on finance I'm looking around £2,750.
I can't help but think that there is something better out there for me but I guess I'm not looking in the right places!
If anyone has any advice or knows of any good deals can you let me know?
Thanks
L

A bus stop.
On a serious note, insurance costs a lot for new drivers. Companies get more and more data all the time and as they do, there are more and more opportunities for car insurance companies to find trends that introduce risk, therefore prices go up.
Being able to afford a car doesn't stop at being able to come up with the amount of money to buy the car, whether that is via finance or not. You need to be able to cover fuel, tax, insurance and excess should you need to claim on your insurance, MOT, servicing and any wear and tear items/breakdowns etc.
As for getting the best deals, it would help to know where you are currently looking. My guess would be comparison websites because that's where everyone goes. Try Aviva, Churchill etc, they don't use comparison sites but do sometimes give competitive quotes. Sign up to TopCashBack if you aren't already and see how much you can get back by taking out a policy online, it can be over £100 sometimes.0 -
Are there any just add fuel deals applicable to your age/experience. A few years ago Mini had some cracking deals on finance with insurance. Xxx0

I'd hazard a guess you're looking at small, low powered, 'typical' new-driver cars (Corsas, Clios, Kas etc).
You may well find an old Volvo estate or a Mondeo will be cheaper to insure, as it's outside the usual risk profile for a young, recently passed driver.0 -

As above, my friends young son had a punto then when he changed to a beemer 1 series 2 litre the insurance reduced massively (not for the price difference of the newer purchase though).
OP you are in 2 dilema's as new driver means you are likely to have a bump or scrape whilst learning the roads, however having a newer(ish) car you are likely to be more vigilant about the other road users around you.0 -
On the comparison site vary the make and model of car, including cars that maybe you wouldn't previously have thought of such as those normally bought by older people...those bought by youngsters might well have a bad insurance record.
Sooner or later you'll find a downward trend and can start to fine tune what cars to look for.
In no particular order check out Toyota Corolla/Auris/Urban Cruiser, Kia Rio/Ceed, Honda Jazz, i'm sure you get the drift.0 -

Free with a black box and they can cancel the insurance if you speed and dont stop when they tell you to.
Risk of them cancelling the insurance and still having to pay for the car and then find another insurer who will cover them.
£450 excess also for young drivers. £350 under 24's
At least it covers commuting and you can add business cover.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

This.
Just Add Fuel is good value for new drivers with little or no NCD.
Though not sure why the OP's prices are so high.
My daughter got quotes on the Picanto as if she had passed her test and they were cheaper than that.
I.am certain she used Confused.com0 -
Try quotes for Honda Jazz. Mostly driven by older motorists. Also if you can get an experienced driver on your policy that will bring it down a bit.just because you are paranoid doesnt mean to say they are not out to get you0
