Is an Ipad all I need?
My steam powered 10 year old Windows XP laptop is on the way out so am wondering if I need to replace it or if the ipad will cover all my needs? I use my laptop for occasional letters and docs (in Libre Office Writer) but also a couple of simple spreadsheets in Libre Office Calc. Will I be able to move those to access and update from the ipad numbers functionality or will I have to set up from scratch in Numbers?
For the documents files I need to retain, can I email them to myself and then save on the ipad?
Or do I still need a laptop?
Thanks.

You might want to get a keyboard for the iPad. The on-screen one can be awkward to use for those used to traditional ones and it takes up precious screen space.
Also consider cloud storage. Google Drive gives you 15GB for free, where the free iCloud space is only 5GB.
Google Docs and Google Sheets also have an Office Compatibility mode, so if you save them in MS format from LibreOffice, you should then be able to open with the Google apps. You can access Google drive from the PC as well. Worth a try.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Many people manage with just a tablet, I wouldn't myself but they seem to live with it. If you're going to buy one anyway why not just give it a try and see how you get on, if it's a struggle with some tasks you can always buy a cheap laptop to use as well. Although if you're worried about compatability you might want to consider a Windows tablet instead.0

I very recently bought an iPad Pro 9.7" just because I'd never had one before and I fancied a bit of fun. It's a piece of art ... beautifully made and a screen that is quite simply amazing.
But would I use it for serious work, no way. My Dell workstation with 24" screen, mouse and keyboard will never be surpassed.
For me the iPad remains just a toy.... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0 -
I bought a tablet, not an apple, but operating system aside, all these tablets are the same kind of game.
As stated above, no way would a tablet replace a laptop. Typing on virtual keyboards just aint the same.
Tablets have less processing power. They are OK for basic web browsing but you'd never write a novel on one and as for music production or serious art-work, forget it. Tablets are hyped up. I sold the one I purchased as it gathered dust. A Toshiba laptop, costing £300 in 2010, is still going strong for me. That has a 17 inch screen, my tablet had a 10 inch which was OK but in no way a serious workspace and too much eye strain for anyone aged over 40 or so.
If you like Apple, purchase a restored 13 inch screen, macbook white model, going on Ebay with 1 year guarantee. I paid just over £300 for one with 8gb ram and a 500gb hard drive. Its 5 years old but immaculate. I have not yet got the Apple bug as I use my Windows and Linux more than Apple with its IOS.
Apple ipads, I've never used, but I'd say the recommendation re the macbook would be way better. Can send you the url or the ebay buyer I got mine from. PM if you need or just search ebay, macbook 13 inch screen. If refurbished, most will last another ten years with ease.
Or just buy a Windows laptop, pay 3-400 and there are tons of good bargains with laptops that will have the specs you need.
Good luck.
Tablets are a placebo, laptops are more practical.0 -

I started with samsung galaxy tab 3, then replaced with ipad. Were the worst to happen, then I am sure I'd return to Samsung. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
