Car hire in Iceland

Hi guys,
Just wondering if anyone has hired a car in Iceland before? I'm looking at doing it through SixT at Keflavik Airport and it mentions about sand, gravel and ash excesses at £13/day on additional extras. There's also the mention of 700km allowed, but you then get charged per mile on top of that unless you take out unlimited which adds £26 on top of the week's total.
I've contacted one of the car hire excess insurance companies to see if they cover those issues (so I'm not insuring myself twice), but just thought I'd ask of any advice from anyone who's actually hired a car there too.
Thanks!

We used Budget at Keflavik last December, had a nice Hyundai i20 with heated seats and heated steering wheel, unlimited mileage, full to full fuel, it was under£20 a day, although winter prices seem much cheaper than summer ones. I took out 3rd party excess insurance, Questor I think, not sure if it would have covered the sand/gravel part though.0

I've hired cars a few times in Iceland - always from Hertz. If you search the forum you will find some recommendations for cheaper car hire firms that use older cars, but I like the convenience of using a company with a 24 hour desk at the airport.
If you use hertz, then the Icelandic website http://www.hertz.is has always been cheaper than going via .co.uk and you can often find a discount voucher as well.
I also took insurance via Questor rather than through Hertz - I asked the question about sand and ash and was given this response "[FONT="]I can confirm that our insurance covers you for any physical damage made to the hire vehicle up to £5,000, this includes damage for sand and ash". You may want to confirm for yourself this is still true.
