Moving to North side of Manchester.

Hey everyone,
We are looking for some advice/suggestions on some "nice areas" to live on the North side of Manchester. We are basically looking for everything you find in the South of Manchester (Cheadle, Didsbury etc).. but on the North side haha. So nice shops, restaurants, parks etc. Somewhere where you can walk down the street in the evening and not feel like you're about to get jumped.
No kids or anything like that so schools aren't an issue. Just looking for a friendly, nice area to live within a stones throw of the ring road/m62 (I work in Warrington, my partner in Bradford).
We have looked at area like Prestwich, Whitefield etc - the only thing putting us off is for our budget (150k MAX) we only seem to find houses that look like they are about to fall down.
Any suggestions are more than appreciated, thank you.

Prestwich is similar.
Look at Monton in Salford but the stuff you are looking will be more than your budget allows even in North Manchester.0 -
first thought was Prestwich. I live in Bury which has some low house prices and nice areas plus access to M60. I used to live in north Manchester if you find anywhere you like the look of, I will probably know it.0

Your budget £120k isn't compatible with Cheadle, Didsbury etc; so it's hardly going to be compatible with any similarly nice areas of north Manchester.:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

Go outside the M60 rather than inside.

I live North of Manchester, although probably a bit further North than you are thinking. Settled here over 20y ago when I couldn't afford 'posh' S Manchester.
Your budget is very low for any 'nice' area truthfully certainly if you are looking for the mini-high street with trendy cafe bars experience.
Its not impossible to find a property but you might have to lower your expectations a little as to the general environment, certainly if you currently have Didsbury and Cheadle on your radar.0 -
Prestwich is the obvious choice, but prices are going up fast because its the obvious choice, 120K won't get you much if anything.
The nicer bits of Salford are Worsley and the surrounding areas, including Monton which has the 'trendy, youthful' factor but is going very much the way of Prestwich in terms of prices. The more affordable parts are places like Boothstown, Mosley Common and Ellenbrook which are pleasant but very suburban, no vegan cafes or organic boutiques.
Have you considered going further East towards Rochdale? Newhey and Milnrow are very handy for the M62 and seem to be attempting to 'up and come' a bit, they're close to more expensive Littleborough which has some of what you're looking for, with the bonus of a tram into Manchester.
Where do you live now? How well do you know Greater Manchester?0 -
How about Hollins? Short drive to the M66, and more importantly, you can get a 2 bed house for £120k-ish.

or, for £90k you could get a 2 bed flat in Unsworth; which is just down the road from Whitefield. It's got a big bit of green space right behind it.

I remember them building those flats as a kid, I went to the primary school they are next to. You'd be able to get a bus to the metrolink in Whitefield.. or you could walk it in about 20 minutes from there.0 -
Yes, Hollins, Unsworth and Sunnybank would all be good choices for you.0

What about something like this: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-42169080.html
Its in Stoneclough, from what I've heard its quite a nice area (not sure about delis, cafes etc though), and its pretty convenient for the M61.0 -
Monton, Worsley, etc are not north Manchester, they are west, surely? Anyway your budget won't get you a house in a trendy area as others have stated, but you could look at Swinton, particularly the area south of the East Lancs Road (A580). It borders Monton and Worsley. It's suburban, but the guided busway means there is easy access to Manchester city centre.0
