I know you have to have the new style passport for travel to the USA. Do you have to have one for Canada. Do you also have to have so many months left on your passport?

You may need one of these
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/eta-start.asp
Although they are having a grace period till September 30, unsubstantiated reports state some people are being turned away before boarding.
If applying for eta give plenty of time, and read the questions and also the help notes for the questions.0 -
Thanks. We know about the ETA. It's just the passport we are worried about. One of us doesn't have the digital one with the little camera shape on the front.0

The old style ones should be reaching their expiry date by the end of this year or certainly within the next 9 months so it would pay you to renew now. The outstanding time that you have on your current passport will be added onto the 10 years of the new one by up to 9 months.0 -
Argh! These eTA's application are a pain in the backside. Heads up - if you are travelling as a family you need to submit one form and one payment for each individual member of your patry. I had to do it 4 times. 3 of which got eTAs email confirmations immediately - the final one i think i got an email regarding payment processing problems....although I suspect that's a message they issue for " we are a bit suspicious about this application because country of birth is not same as country of passport and we need to check this out but we'll pretend you are having payment issues" - i was quite sleepy when I submitted these and I didn't save the mssage or take a screeenshot, but I think it said that they would check it out and send email about the application soon...I'm still waiting. There's no phone number to talk to someone about it. There's only a FAQ but that's not particularly helpful.,...and we leave in 4 days time. So hopefully i will receive a response within the 72 hours that they state...otherwise I will just re-apply. Pain.0

You might also want to check with your bank or credit card. I've had the fraud department refuse payments when there have been a few "identical" transactions in a row.0
