Hi PSL just found your diary again. It's been almost 6 months since you started the diary and you must have been trying hard to get your debts down. But I'm confused with your figures - might be worth rechecking them and working out how much you've paid off? Is the bank loan your overdraft or is that something you've not included?

    You started off with debts of;
    £2450 Bankloan
    £3225 0% credit card
    £3620 0% credit card
    £2500 overdraft
    £2800 credit card 18%

    And now;
    Mbna £7800
    Sains £2944
    Halif £1850
    Loan £1685
    Hsbc £1000
Saving money right, left and centre
  • Hey PSL,

That date is getting so close now till the loan is gone.

I've been so bad at keeping up to date on here the last couple of weeks, sorry bout that.

  • There were a few balance transfers which have rejigged things slightly so it looks a bit different but I haven't really paid very much off. Once the loan is gone it will be easier in 2017.

I have high hopes for 2017.

  • A bit confessionary. I bought a laptop and a hoover. Feel a bit guilty and like I should definitely be making some progress but I am keeping both. I just need to get it a bit more together and break some seriously bad habits. Please don't bash me, I am honestly getting there.

I also lost my train ticket and had to pay £100 for a replacement although I have appealed to the train company. I think its fair to say that their rules are quite mean so not sure how that will go. I love the irony that my appeal for a refund goes on the desk of someone that gets free travel. Very annoying to be honest. Meaning overdraft up to £190 instead of £90.

Nsd today. Food shop tommorow, but a very small one.
Have a steak in my freezer i am going to eat this week, got quite a lot of food in so no big food shop beyond fruit, veg, bread, cheese, milk.
One big social and £38 direct debits.
Payday is 1 week on friday so it is coming.

Had to tell my friend 3 times today that I don't want to go for dinner because I am trying to hang onto money. We will do something next month after payday but wish they would understand. Hardly any support at all, wish all my friends would buy flats and then they might have an idea of how it is. Plus fielding ridiculous questions on whether I am going to learn to drive.
This is a quiet week tho which is good. Can not wait to be rid of the loan.

You need to get a proper plan in place now ready for the time you expect the loanto be paid off and you need to cover both scenarios in your plan.

Plan 1 ... you get the bonus to pay off loan, freeing you £X amount. What will then happen to that "extra" money how will you allocate it to your debts etc.

Plan 2 ... something goes off course slightly and the bonus isn't as you were expecting and you can't pay off the loan. You need a plan in case this happens so it doesn't throw you into a panic at the time. If the bonus doesn't come about for whatever reason what is your plan to start further reducing the debt as looking at your figures it has increased slightly?

Are the laptop and hoover on credit too?

  • I plan to pay off the smaller balances first so leaving the mbna and Sainsbury as both are on long term 0% and everything else has a shorter end date. I will probably keep the £100 for clothes or house which will make me far more comfortable and increase emergency fund to £50 a month. Paying £50 to the debt.

There may not be a bonus and I am thinking about this. I think I would probably then temporarily stop paying my parents back and concentrate on getting rid of the loan to free up the £153 a month. So after march the loan will be £1070 which I would concentrate on blitzing ASAP.
Laptop and hoover on credit. I am heavily cutting down on social in december and not letting myself have anything else. I have said no to about 6 December things already. I did need a hoover and the one I bought is fantastic. Laptop was a basic one/does the job. But I think I should have waited for the laptop.

  • If you need these items then keep them, sometimes these expenses just crop up & nothing can be done about that.

That is awful about the train ticket! Hopefully you can get the money back.

I get an annual bus ticket that work pays for then they deduct it out my wages & I have the fear that I will lose it!!

Not good about the friends, its a battle sometimes isn't it.

  • Ohh no you've lost the ticket!! I hope you get it back! Things should be electronic or on an app on your phone!! I would need to tie in round my neck if I were you!!

The comment about your debt not reducing is one thing, but the fact it hasn't increased is massive!! When in the past would you have thought twice about buying a coat?! I doubt it! Had you not been concentrating on debt this year I'm sure it would have been much higher.

Hoovers/Laptops - not exactly every month purchases, I'd just forget it and get on with it - they are essentials xx
