Commuting from Leeds to York - doable?

Thanks for the suggestion - I suppose I would end up saving time and money with this option. And you're right, I could go to Leeds in my free time.
I've had a look at rental prices for York and they are quite pricey in comparison to Leeds but I would probably be saving in the long run as I would save on travel costs.
I don't think you'd settle in either place if you did this. I'm assuming you don't know many people up north yet?
Are you familiar with areas up north?
Personally I'd go for Leeds city centre and get the train. Do you need a car? Can you rent one for the times you need one? Or do car share which is where you rent one per hour. I'm sure they do those in Leeds.
York is pretty but having been a southerner for a few years, I think Leeds is a better step. (I know both fairly well)
I'd stick to city centre flats rather than go into other areas as hunslet etc.0 -
Also ...consider petrol cost. As £200 train seems a lot but compare it to petrol costs.
As someone who commutes a long way to work- it's the cost of petrol and time spent in a car that drives me crazy. If I could get a train I would but that's not an option for me.0 -
York is a lovely place. Why wouldn't you want to live there?0

Take three guesses why rent is cheap in Hunslet. Forget Leeds. Live in York.0

Maybe check out Wetherby, Knaresborough and Harrogate as well, you can get the train into leeds from all 3 places. Anything north of Leeds will be pricey.
They have thrown up thousands of new build apartments in the past 10 years in the city centre so plenty of choice if you want a rabbit hutch.0 -
Wetherby hasn't had a station for about 50 years0

If you want to live in Leeds and would be commuting by car, I would suggest you look at North Leeds, so Adel, Horsforth, Alwoodley. Easy access to roads to York, and nice areas. Horsforth has the added benefit of a train station with a direct link into Leeds (only about 10 minutes), so you can still commute by train if you prefer.
Headingley also has some nice areas, but some of it is studentland so you have to pick and choose.0 -
It's actually a really nice drive on the rare occasion when the roads are clear, especially the York half of the A64. You could always live in the city centre too, since you can get onto the A64 from the junction just behind the Grand Arcade. Traffic could be a problem but I suppose that depends on what time you start and finish work.0

Whereabouts will you be working in York? Driving into the city centre is a nightmare at the best of times, never mind rush hour.
If you do drive then if at all possible avoid the northern ring road (A1237) it's single carriageway and covered in roundabouts so takes an age to get anywhere. (My other half has to use it, a 10 mile drive takes 30 mins on a good day)
Trains run between the 2 cities all day and some new shiny buses have recently appeared "CityZap" that run between Leeds and York.0 -
Thanks for the info! Not bad travel time at all considering it currently takes me 40mins by train to travel to work in central London and I live in South London!
Do you have any experience of this journey? Is it a fairly reliable service? Do you often get a seat or does it get really full?
Does a seat really matter for 23 minutes?
fwiw, I've heard very good things about both Leeds and York. If you can live in one of those and work in the other, and they're only 23 minutes apart, I imagine you're likely to have a decent life.0
