Commuting from Leeds to York - doable?

Hi All!
I'm a 28 year old female, currently living in London but have been offered a great job opportunity in York.

I've visited York before and although I think its a beautiful place, I feel it may be a little small and quiet for me so think I would be better suited to live in Leeds. Do you think the driving commute from Leeds to York is doable 5 days a week? Does anyone have any experience doing this commute? I've read a number of horror stories about traffic between these two places but it seems travelling into Leeds may be the problem - could anyone advise on this?

I've also read that driving across Leeds in the morning can get really busy so i'm thinking of renting near Leeds Docks or Hunslet - could anyone advise on these areas, or recommend any other areas to look into? Being close to the City Centre, having a parking space and being close to Leeds train station are some important factors for me.

Many thanks in advance!

I have a relative who lives in Ripon whom I visit fairly often so have some knowledge of the area.

Expect very heavy congestion during rush hours when driving into York.

Parking in York is not easy.

The roads round both Leeds bus and train stations are equally congested.

Had you considered commuting by train?

i wasn't sure about traffic coming into York so thanks for the information. If I was to drive in I would have an allocated parking space at work so that won't be a problem.

Just had a look at the possibility of taking the train - a monthly season ticket would cost £200, quite pricey but something to consider I suppose.

I refuse to believe if you've done London anything can be worse.....

Thanks for the info! Not bad travel time at all considering it currently takes me 40mins by train to travel to work in central London and I live in South London!

Do you have any experience of this journey? Is it a fairly reliable service? Do you often get a seat or does it get really full?

I have a better idea. Live in York and then go to Leeds at the weekend and for evenings out then you miss the rush hour altogether but get to spend time in Leeds in your free time.

Thanks for the suggestion - I suppose I would end up saving time and money with this option. And you're right, I could go to Leeds in my free time.

I've had a look at rental prices for York and they are quite pricey in comparison to Leeds but I would probably be saving in the long run as I would save on travel costs.

I commuted for a while from Middlesbrough to York daily. My working hours made it easy and with my young persons railcard I was actually paying less than many York residents paid in bus fare to travel on the train!!

If that's doable, Leeds definitely is.

    Hi

I moved from Midlands to York and work in Leeds. Previously I used to live in the City. The trains are very frequent and there are plenty of seats. Parking in the centre of Leeds is a premium. York has a magical feel and with the tourist is pretty much feels like being in London but without living in top of each other.
