    Other than possibly theft what difference does anyone think staying in a hostel will make to insurance? Thefts do happen in hostels but more likely in the big dorm type - most hostels these days tend to be smaller dorms (4-6 people). Most common thing I've had nicked is shavers.

    But in Barcelona pickpocketing is more likely so tell him to be careful on public transport and in crowded areas particularly Las Ramblas. But not to worry it's a great city and relatively safe when it comes to more serious crime, I certainly felt a lot safer in Barcelona late at night than in London.
