Travel Insurance and Hostels

Son has booked a hostel and flights for Barcelona for a week at the end of July and I am now helping him sort out travel insurance.
He has also said that he will probably go away again during the year so we are looking at an annual policy.
My question is, will general travel insurance policies cover him for staying in a hostel, or will he have to find a specialist one?
I have looked at some of the policy documents but they don't mention shared accommodation.

Don't see why not. Just be aware of theft cover - usually has locked hotel room requirements or similar.0 -
In one occasion, my Hotel has been cancelled on my trio overseas my hotel was cancelled the day I arrive at the hotel. They explain this is due to the unexpected incidence where someone has broken the windows for the room I have booked. In this situation, I will need taxi to travel from one place to another to find a hotel by myself in a very short duration of time, thus increase the cost.
My question:
Based on general travel insurance policy coverage, could I claimed back from the travel insurance?
What else I could do in this situation to minimize damage?
Thanks0 -

The hostel information mentions secure lockers and it has good reviews. I have chatted with him to make full use of safes, etc. I think I will just have to pick one and read through the small print carefully.
Without belittling the theft side (as he/we will try and minimise the risk) the insurance is mainly for all the other bits (medical, repatriation, etc).Ditch 100 in January Challenge 100/100

For medical, repatriation on which type of accommodation you are staying does not carry any relevant. The relevant bit is just the are/country you are staying e.g warzone.
Most insurance (if not all) will cover cover medical, repatriation. The only difference is the excess and limit of coverage.0 -

Barcelona is a beautiful city, he will really enjoy it, but please make him aware that pick pocketing a major issue and to think about where he keeps his wallet etc on him.0 -

You surely know better than to hijack an existing thread with a completely different question. I suggest that you delete your post and start your own thread then I'll delete this one.0 -
He just suddenly decided (well suddenly told us!) that he was going. He had already done all his research and just got me to check everything and book it for him. He is going by himself and I am trying to put my motherly instinct to one side and be happy for him whilst discretely 'suggesting' how to be safe. He is 21 so I really should release those apron stringsDitch 100 in January Challenge 100/100

Well here we go again. Your profile name rings the bell from another thread ....
My intention is not to create too many threads. I will delete my post when I want to and not because someone who is not the owner of the forum is telling me.
I am not aware about the term of hijacking people here in this forum. Mine to post the link ?? If I am acting against the rule than report it ....
And oh yes, it is your post so you are free to delete your post anytime you want to, not depends on another member ...0 -

I felt it was a reasonable assumption that someone who has been posting for 6 years would be aware of the dislike of hijacking threads. Obviously that wasn't the case, but now you are. Your question has absolutely nothing to do with the topic of this thread, and should be posted as a new thread. You'll notice that nobody has actually made any attempt to answer your question, and regular posters are unlikely to do so as they dislike hijacking as much as I do.0 -
I think actually the level of insurance may vary country to country and hostel to hostel. It might be emailing the hostel ahead of time and asking what insurance they have, if any.0
