Why has Milk gone up so much lately?

If all the farmers said "no, I'll make a loss", then the supermarkets wouldn't have any milk to sell and the price they pay would increase.
Simple supply and demand.
Supermarket tells the farmer what they will pay and the farmers contracted to the supermarket . If the supermarket drops this price bellow the cost to produce then the farmer either deals with this ( in the short term ) or goes out of business ( long term ) .
The farmer could refuse to accept the price and then the supermarket will simply go elswhere for its supply leaving the farmer bankrupt .
Its not supply and demand but supermarkets trying to draw in customers off low prices and deals which they dont pay for , the farmer does . The farmers suffer and so does the countryside etc etc . Milk then gets sourced abroad and we are all poorer for it ..... for the sake of about 25 pence a week . Sometimes saving a few quid a year isnt worth it .0 -
The cost of milk is too low for what the cows have to go through on the rape rack, so my sympathy goes to them and not the farmers.Weight Loss - Start (21st September 2016) 13st 10lbs, Current 10st 10lb (20th August 2017) :j

Maybe but it all adds up.
Say 3 bottles a week = 60p.
52 weeks = £31.20.
Would you want that money in your pocket or the supermarkets? The more I live, the more I learn.
The more I learn, the more I grow.
The more I grow, the more I see.
The more I see, the more I know.
The more I know, the more I see,
How little I know.!!

Those are not the dairy farmers though.I let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -

I will pay more providing this extra goes to farmers. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
In this country we seem to put little value on food, we'll pay £3.50 for a pint of beer but are only prepared to pay 25p for a pint of milk that was 20p a pint 30 odd years ago. I do pay more for British organic milk, we get through 2 pints a day so it costs us a whole £25 or so extra per year.
What I'd really like to do is buy a cow and pay the farmer for it's upkeep and have free milk, but I haven't found a scheme yet0 -
Buy in Farmfoods. 2 x 2L fresh semi-skimmed or whole for £1.00. (That's 7 pints for £1.00.
Is this a regular price or just during promotion term ??
If it is regular why it has not been spotted by the eagle eyes of the bargain hunters on HUKD ?
Noone has ever mentioned it on this MSE either ...
Any link OP ??
Has anyone else seen it at this price on farm food ??0 -

There are some farmers around who also have pasteurisation and bottling equipment -

but, if you wanted milk all year round, you'd need to pay for more than one cow! Easier to just buy milk from the on-farm dairy.0 -
