Boot into safe mode by pressing F8 on your keyboard repeatedly after you've turned on the power.
Go to Control Panel, System, click on the System Restore tab and select the checkbox that says 'turn off system restore on all drives.' Then run a full virus scan in Safe mode. Reboot as normal.

Open up task manager, processes
Click on "user name"
Don't unload any where it says "system" next to the image name
Don't unload any where it say's "Network service"
Where it listed with your user name don't unload "iexplorer.exe" or "taskmgr"
end each process next to your user name
You should be left with explorer.exe and the task manager ok
now try a online scan and heal.

This is because Norton is useless. Seriously! You've just proved it is!
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php This is a good one, it was mentioned earlier. I used it last night and it found an old virus from IRC that i had partly deleted. Brilliant scanner for free!0 -
Online virus checkers are good, desktop virus checkers like norton use a long list of virus definitions to check for virus's but you have to update your virus scanner to get the newest definitions. Norton take a few hours for serious threats or a few days to update thier database after the virus is released, The online scanners although they have a much smaler database , they always have popular virus's and are good to use, but they don't have as large a database and don't have a very good ability to clean viru's even though it is good at detecting them.
Norton is much more likely to clear the virus's it has detected it and scan incoming mail and downloads.
It's good to have both.0 -
Done the bitdefender brought up not viruses.
I cant do a virus scan in safe mode as advised earlier as I have no internet access whilst in safe mode. If I have no virus (although www3.ca.com and housecall tell me oherwise) how have I lost my desktop background, having weird things going on with my processes tab in task manager, lost automatic updates in my services section and have no access to hotmail.
Also drlight mentioned that I should have task manager in my processes...... I dont. However I still have square boxes as well as blanks in my image name.
Got another recovery disk off sony and it still brings up the same error (basically saying that it isnt the right disk and to confirm the model), it clearly states that its the right one!
I am totally confused and dont have a clue how to resolve it!:j BABY A :j0 -
You don't need to be connected to the internet to run Norton (you mentioned having it earlier).
Run any antivirus (ie. Norton) and anti spyware software while in safe mode.
If you can, before you do this, make sure they are updated.
Did you try Ewido as I mentioned in an earlier post?Torgwen.....................

I've had murder over the last couple of weeks with trojan horses. One connected to one of the dll's associated with logging onto XP and so could never be got rid of by Norton or by deleting as the file was always in use as soon as you got to the Desktop screen.
The way I got around this was to install the o/s on the second partition and then booting up through this and then replacing the infected dll on the normal partition with the one from the second. Do you have a second partition or another hard drive installed on your machine?
Also, Norton may not be picking it up if you haven't been running the live updates for it. If you double click on the yellow globe in your system tray you'll be able to run it once you've opened Norton. Even then, Norton may not be able to remove it.
Just noticed that you mentioned Sony. Is it a Vaio?0 -
You can try and get microsofts security updates as well, you said you couldn't use autoupdate, so you can download them all from sourceforge instead of microsft, but it means downloading everything, (it's about 130mb), but it's in one file and autoinstalls all security updates you don't have. Some of the updates might get your system working a bit more normally.
The square boxes and blanks arn't normal file names and are very likely infected.0 -
No, I experienced my problems on a Dell.
However, I've just rebuilt a Vaio PCV-RS224 for a friend and I had the same problem with the Sony recovery disk supplied with that :wall: As the machine was over 12 months old, Sony support wanted £12.50 before I even spoke to them about it.Absolute nightmare but got there in the end.
Anyway, if your warranty is < 12 months for your Vaio then Sony are obliged to offer you telephone support to help you sort out your Recovery Disk.
If you bought it new (or if it has not been registered) then you may also be able to get help from the self-help group on https://www.vaio-link.com
Failing that, do you have a second hard drive (or partition) on the machine? I know the Vaio I worked on was partitioned so as to appear to have two hard drives.0
