Whoa there kitchen Sink! Hold your horses! I wouldn't say I love my current tariff and if my annual bill is anything to go by I am most certainly not in a romantic mood! However, I am concerned at losing the 'cheaper' rate for the current 14 hours when I don't think 7 or 10 hours is enough to provide the comfortable heating levels I currently enjoy. It's an old system and whilst I have been impressed with the level of heating it provides, reducing the heat input by almost a third is unlikely to maintain this level of comfort.

All of that said, I appreciate your comments and trying out the E10 for a year is an option. It does bother me though that if E10 doesn't work out, I then have to change again and presumably pay for a different meter if I decide to move to E7 at that stage. There is also the added issue of low number of E10 tariffs.

The advice from a couple of people about using a comparison site to look at costs based on current usage is one I have tried but it's difficult to estimate what proportion of my current usage I could move to the cheaper night time rate if I switched to E7 or E10. I could move washer, dryer and dishwasher and immersion heater over to the cheaper rate (yes, we still have one of THOSE too!) but it would take a brighter person than me to estimate what that would look like.

I think I've made a decision. You'll find the property on Rightmove tomorrow!

Seriously though, thanks everyone for all your comments and suggestions. Much appreciated.
  • In #8 - I recognised going E7 would lose your comfortable heating levels, so I said :
Just install a sufficient quantity of stored heat in the living area and go E7 water & space heating. Panel heating will provide for the non-living areas. Tariff, metering and wiring for water controller and heating will need to be assessed and modified as required. Best of luck.

That way you get the price advantage the rest of us have without comprising your comfort. Best of luck.

I don't think you are charged for changing tariff/meter Hotair, as long as you aren't changing every five minutes.

Just to confirm Hotair. There's no charge for a meter exchange to replace your current set up with Economy 7/10/single rate. If, though, you make the change and then decide to go for something else later, it's likely there'll be a charge. At the moment, we're charging £64.76 for non-essential meter exchanges so you're right to be wary.

The tariff withdrawal isn't happening right now. If your current set up is okay, there's no need to switch to anything immediately if that's what you prefer. It's just that we're trying to give customers as much notice as possible. Should the meter become faulty, though, or come up for exchange due to reaching its sell by date, we won't be able to do a like for like swap. Meters like yours are no longer available.

We'll be in touch again nearer the time of the tariff withdrawal. In the meantime, we'll be happy to talk about the impact this might have on your bills. There's a phone number on the letter you've received that will take you straight through to the specialist team dealing with this. I'd suggest having a chat to them.

Hope this is of interest Hotair.

As above jk0, we're not charging to replace meters under the current programme to upgrade properties with old off peak meters. Non-essential meter exchanges, though, currently cost £64.76.

With tariffs, there are no fees to go from one E.ON product to another. Exit fees only apply on certain Fixed Price tariffs and then only if outside the renewal period (49 calendar days before the tariff ends until 20 days after).[FONT=&quot]
