What are the consequences to landlords renting out unsafe properties?

It seems to be ambiguous and on the landlord zone, it seems that there have been more fines in county courts for unsafe renting practices like renting out properties that didn't comply with council standards.
Can landlords be banned from renting for this?

Landlords can be (and have been) banned from renting out properties using the new 'ASBO's' (criminal behaviour orders I believe)
However: there is no requirement for a private landlord to meet council standards. (unless those standards are literally the minimum, which they in general are not)
The fines wont be in county courts, but rather magistrates courts.
'Unsafe' can mean a lot. Can you describe what you are referring to.0 -
One consequence could be a prison term.
If a tenant died as a direct result of a landlord's neglect of a known safety issue, a manslaughter charge could result.0 -

Clearly any wrongdoer should be appropriately punished (Landlord, MP, cowboy builder etc etc). I am pleased to report sometimes landlords do get what's coming to them e.g
http://www.propertyindustryeye.com/landlord-hit-with-70000-bill-over-damp-and-dangerous-homes/A landlord said to own properties managed by her partner’s letting agency has been hit with a bill of nearly £70,000 for letting out damp, dangerous and mice-infested homes.
http://www.landlordzone.co.uk/news/81k-fine-for-hmo-landlord
the unfortunately named Mr De'ath ...An HMO Landlord Mr De’Ath was fined a total of £72,000, ordered to pay prosecution costs of £8,700 and a victim surcharge of £120 at Blackpool Magistrates Court for eighteen separate breaches of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 relating to three of his premises.......
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-36203249An "appalling" landlord who kept tenants' deposits worth almost £7,000 has been barred from renting out his property by Glasgow City Council.
Shaban Rehman was found to no longer be a fit and proper person to be a landlord or agent and has been removed from the private landlord's register.
The decision means he cannot let any of his eight flats - or 20 managed through his letting firm, Better Homes Glasgow.
Any attempt would be a criminal offence subject to a fine of up to £50,000.
etc etc etc etc...0
