Compensation for missed event caused by delay?

Hi everyone,
Sorry if this is in the wrong place or covered elsewhere, but I couldn't find any precedent on this one.
I was scheduled to fly BA to Madrid yesterday from Heathrow for the sole purpose of attending the Copa del Rey final. My flight was scheduled to depart LHR at 3.05pm and arrive in Madrid at 6.35pm local time, which would have given me 3 hours to reach the venue -- i.e. ample time.
However, a fault was discovered on the plane while we sat on the tarmac, which essentially meant that the plane was not going to fly and everyone would be re-booked onto another flight at 7.05pm. This flight arrived in Madrid yesterday at 10.44pm local time (4 hours later than planned), which was also about an hour and a bit after the event's scheduled start.
I know that it's not necessarily the airline's fault, but it seems a little frustrating that I could be out of pocket for something so obviously beyond my control (and for expecting a flight to be reasonably punctual).
I understand that I'm due fixed compensation in line with EU regs (E250), but is there any scope to claim back the costs incurred (i.e. ticket price) as a result of me missing the event?
Thanks in advance for the guidance.

You will be due €250 euro for the delay as long as it is not an extraordinary circumstance. But you are not entitled to compensation for your ticket, you could try your travel insurance.0

Thanks for the reply Justice, appreciate it!
Yeah, definitely not exceptional circumstances so have gone down that route already. My Amex platinum travel insurance only covers pre-paid expenses if the delay was six hours or more, which seems unfortunate for me.

Firstly, if you need to post anything further PLEASE use the BA thread not your own personal thread creating yet more lutter on the forum.
Second, alas as your delay was less than 5 hours you cannot claim a refund of your flight in addition to your compensation. If you're new. read The FAQ and Vauban's Guide
