When do parents start becoming uncool?

My daughter had a before school tantrum this morning because she wanted to wear her minecraft creeper costume to school :rotfl:
We didn't allow it for obvious reasons, but it got me thinking that eventually she will find me uncool like the way i found my parents uncool. Especially my dad!
My earliest memory of discovering my parents weren't cool was when i was 13. I had to go to town with them on a Saturday, and i was spotted with them by a girl from school
So worried was i, that i spent the rest of the weekend thinking up an excuse as to why i was seen with my parents. The best i came up with was that i'd ran out of money and had to meet them to get some more :rotfl:
So yeah, when did you discover your parents weren't cool?

I'd agree, when I was 13
When my dad went out, his clothing of choice was a mac and a beret. Now that was bad enough....but when I was 13 'Some Mother's Do 'Ave 'Em' started, so he looked like Frank Spencer!
It was VERY traumatic!!Early retired - 18th December 2014
If your dreams don't scare you, they're not big enough0 -
I found early teens was the time my kids started classing me and their Dad 'uncool'.
We occasionally played on it. Apparently if your over 20 your too old to give a "safe".This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Isn't it obligatory to be both uncool and embarrassing in equal measures?
It must be somewhere between 11 and 13 as son thinks O.H and I are o.k whereas daughter blatantly hides if she sees anyone from the same school. There are over 1000 students do you know how good she is at ducking and diving?Life is like a bath, the longer you are in it the more wrinkly you become.0 -
LOVE THIS THREAD !!
i delight in embarassing my child and see it as payback for the pain of labour!! no, not really but i was informed the other day that it's "not cool to say cool" so then i said it all day on purpose...
if she had rolled her eyes any more i think they'd have fallen out of her head !!:rotfl:
i also like to sing and/or dance a bit in the shops if there is music on...... :cool:Best headline ever on local paper??
"Weight loss group doubles in size"0 -
You have taken me right back to a night I arranged for my parents to meet my first boyfriend in a local pub and my mother turned up in a full length fake fur coat. She looked like she had stepped out of the 50s and this was the mid 70s. I was mortified. I still cringe now 40 odd years later.0

Call it around transition to secondary school, where you as parent are measured against a much bigger pool of Other Parents & usually found wanting as it is Massively Uncool to reckon that the APs are actually pretty good company, generous, and make excellent staff (after all that training your child has put into you...)
I miss being the radiant mummy goddess of before primary, but I am the Bank of Mum & sole driver. Call me "uncool" (or whatever) in my earshot & whaddaya know? The wifi password has changed Again...
And as for Parents Evening <evil snicker, pondering where to source a fake fur - I used to have one!> O Sweet child o mine, watch out...0 -
I think it was in my early teens. Then in my late teens I started to talk to my dad about his life and go through his record collection and I realised I was probably the uncool one!0

My son started to find me embarrassing in junior school, I've asked him why but he can't really come up with a reason apart from me calling him when he's not home on time
What's really annoying is that his dad doesn't embarrass him at all, it's only me that makes him cringe!0 -
I don't think that my teenage daughter has ever been embarrassed by me (but she sees the good in everyone). I'd like to say that I've never been embarrassed by her but sadly I can't
My 12yo son has just started to be, shall we say, irritated by some things I do when in the company of his peers, otherwise I'm still "cool". So I was "cool" for taking him to get his hair cut at his favourite barber but when I told him in public (shock, horror, how dare I?) that it was a good cut and he looked great I got the rolling eyes and the "Oh, Muuuuuuuummmmmm!" comment.
My 11yo son has never cared what anyone thinks anyway and still treats me as he always has (actually, he is MORE affectionate in public at the moment - the cynical part of me thinks he's after something).
My 3yo thinks that her parents are the best and frequently tells us and everyone else that she loves us.
So it is probably the age at which the transition between schools occurs, once past the initial shock of secondary school.0 -
