Vista updates

Hello

Checking my update history I have noticed the last Vista update was on the 6 Apr. I have checked my update settings & they are still set to automatic updates.

I am not very computer savvy & realise Vista is on the way out but according to the Windows lifecycle fact sheet extended support for Vista does not end until April next year. Apparently my laptop is suitable for Windows7 & as I perfectly happy with my laptop I was going to wait until about next March before biting the bullet & upgrading to Windows7.

Should I be worried that it has been a while since Vista updated or is this now normal?

Also if it makes any difference my version of Vista is Home Premium.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Someone else had the same problem over on this thread:

In that case it seemed that a reboot freed it up.

Thanks but the link doesn't seem to work.

If by reeboot you mean closing everything down & turning the laptop off & on again i do this at the end of every session.

Ah - for some reason the Forum is confused when the link doesn't start with "http://" - sorry about that. Fixed now.

Well in Windows 10 or Windows 8, you would need to select 'Restart' rather than 'Shutdown' , and they would be slightly different because a Restart would fix more problems, but I'm not sure that applies to Vista. Worth a go perhaps.

Also what happens if you go into Control Panel then (I think) Windows Update, and manually check for updates? Perhaps you've done this already though.

Could be 101 reasons for this. If a reboot doesn't sort it out try this Vista specific fix
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/940520
and then follow these steps to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent

I've had 14 Vista updates on 12th May.

    Thanks everyone.

First i will try a reboot hitting restart & if that doesn't work i will work my way through the other solutions. I will post how i get on.

However, the laptop still works ok at the moment.

It may work but it will be vulnerable.

If still no-go try command prompt and type in sfc /scannow (note space).

    Hello

Last night I turned on the laptop & still no sign of any updates. Then restarted the laptop as advised, checked updates again & still nothing. Then selected check for updates as I have done previously without success but this time let it to run for a while. After about an hour (after midnight) it came up with 9 recommended updates. I selected them but they were very slow in installing so I went to bed & left the computer on with updates still installing.

Checked this morning & message stated updates had successfully installed (hooray) & to restart computer. I did this & checked again. As normal it stated no recommended updates, last updates 6 April & 5 optional updates. However, on selecting update history it states a load of updates installed successfully this morning at 3am. Only one failed to install this is called Definition Update Windows Defender. On scrolling down the update history list this one was last installed successfully in March. Also according to my update history this is the first time one has failed to install.

So am I right in thinking I am ok for now & how do I make sure I start getting updates again in future. Also how do I install the update that failed? I can also confirm I am still selected for automatic updates.

Thanks to everyone for the help so far.

It might be worth running a few scans in case you've been infected; Malwarebytes http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/ and Rogue Killer http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/roguekiller/
