I am devastated the local vet has charged me over 200 pounds for a diagnosis of an over active thyroid
I went back for second time and the charge is the same for a further blood test and more medication I have not paid this part of the bill I have since found out that another local vet charges a third of the price for the same Is there anything I can do

Why do you think you shouldn't pay for services you have benefitted from?

    Do you not have insurance?

You can use another vet in future and pay what you currently owe.

    I certainly wouldnt not pay

I have just paid him in fact I am just devastated he charged me 480 pounds Treatment with other vet would have been 166 pounds

Can seen how the higher price is justified

Is there any organisation I can report it to

Gosh that is a lot. Ask him for a breakdown of the charges. I know they have to be paid, and work hard to become vets and deserve decent money, but that is a lot...

Maybe seek advice from a solicitor?

As I said, vets do deserve to be paid for their services and their skills, but people with pets do NOT deserve to be ripped off!
Proud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!

Change vets and make it very clear why you are leaving.

I don't think there is anything that a solicitor could do, as service providers can charge whatever they wish. You should ask the cost before accepting and go elsewhere if not satisfied, as is your right.

Have you taken a breakdown of costs from the old vet to the new vet to make sure they're quoting for the exact same thing? Have you looked at reviews online for the new vet or spoken to existing customers to see what they say about the level of care?

Try and find out from a private practice doctor it would cost for you to have the same treatment

A Vet is no different from a doctor

Pay it and move to another vet, but make sure you tell them why you are moving to another vet

Did the second vet tell you how much it would cost of have you just hear form a friend of a freind
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Just like Sainsbury can charge more for items than Asda, vets set their own fees depending on their income and expenditure.

Vet A may trade form more expensive premises with more facilities. He may provide more services or pay his staff more than vet B.

Vet A may provide his own out of hours cover so incur higher staff costs for the extra hours, whereas vetB may close up shop at 6pm and pass all out of hours cases to an out of hours service here you have you travel further to get emergency treatment in the evening or at weekends .at a vet who has no previous medical history for your animal.

Make sure you check what facilities are available from the second vet and that you are happy with them.

Also check that you are comparing apples with apples and not apples with oranges.

You could pay for a private prescription and order meds from somewhere reputable online in the future, or use a different vet.

I don't have any experience of the cost of managing thyroid issue, however from my own experience a good vet is worth their weight in gold. Some do overcharge, others you get what you pay for.
