Car Hire Queries - Advice appreciated...

We are off to Italy in a few weeks and I'm looking to book a car for 5 days.
I have been searching using the comparison sites and so far Budget car hire are the only company I have found who will accept a UK debit card and who don't require a credit card to make the booking.
It seems to be a pre-requisite for everyone else.
Can anyone recommend any other reputable/trustworthy car hire firms who accept debit cards for payment who I could price check with?
Secondly...is it worth phoning these firms up to try and get a more competitive quote over the phone or is online the way to go when proceeding with the booking?
