I always thought Freepost was treated the same as 2nd class post - some freepost however, appears to go through as quick as 1st.

Also with an alpha/numeric code ater ie FREEPOST NAT12345 is that 1st class, 2nd or what?

Anyone got any knowledge of this ??

It depends on the free post option that the company pays for. Free is in free for you. Not free for the company.

Freepost can be second or first.

ive always been told that "freepost" addresses were treated as second class post as well, people shouldnt confuse "freepost" addresses with those that are postage paid which indicate a 1st or 2nd in top right hand corner and may also have freepost addresses.

second class post can be as quick as first class post as well.

off topic if stamps are stuck in any other place other than top right hand corner they often dont get franked and can be reused. ( someone will say that stamps stuck in top right hand corner sometimes dont get franked either, thats true as well.)

Freepost standard can be first or second class, and there are other Freepost options (Freepost Plus etc) too:

I too had thought that all Freepost was treated as 2nd class mail so it is interesting to see that the pre-printed envelopes can be coded as first class.

All those we write by hand are always going to be 2nd class though. (Even so, from experience, I think that they sometimes get through in a day.)

So when I send my investment application & massive cheque via FREEPOST - how do I know whether it's going to take 1 -> 2 days (ie 1st class) to get there or 3-> infinity days (ie 2nd class) ???

Not confused after following the link provided by isofa (who I have thanked for providing the link).

Royal Mail have freepost services where the organisation (the bank or whoever) provides customers with preprinted envelopes in a format approved by Royal Mail. These can be coded for 1st or 2nd class treatment.

Royal Mail have a specific statement that says where the customer (eg you and me) uses their own envelope and adds the address manually (and therefore it doesn't have the special coding), they will always be treated as 2nd class mail.

You put a 1st class stamp on it instead of using Freepost.
Then you'll be sure it will arrive in 1>2 days ...
or possibly 3 -> ...
or maybe more ....... :rotfl:
