Well thanks for the replies, I have read the article and stopped when it said about connecting to the router with a cable to set it up! I was asking how to set this up using wifi as I do not want to spend £25 for a cable to connect my Macbook to the router, if I did I would connect directly to the homeplug without the router.
Plus a wifi booster is no good as the second homeplug will be out of range.
So has any of you used an old router in this way? Do any routers have an input that is not a phone line?
I ask again is there a simple way of connecting a wifi transmitter to a homeplug.

    Whoosh!

You can ask the question as many times as you want, the answer is still the same.

The problem is that although you say that you have read the article, it is obvious from your latest post that you simply don't understand the detailed instructions provided and how this is an ideal solution for your requirements!

OP, you say you have a pair of Homeplugs: what make/model please?

My setup: Router in central room (lounge) has wireless connection for wife's laptop (dining room) and ethernet cable to one TP Link PA-4020 Adapter:
    http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/cat-18_TL-PA4020-KIT.html

In this room (3 walls away) is the desktop I am working on, with another PA-4020, connected to the desktop via a short ethernet cable. This system works perfectly well and the router also supplies ethernet across the loft and into the lounge TV, as well as wireless to a smartphone and a Kindle. Short Ethernet cables are NOT expensive.

EDIT: 1 -there is also a version available with "Pass through" that accepts another 3 pin plug.
2 - The PA-4020 ethernet port is at the TOP of the plug.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

The homeplugs I have are old Talk Talk ones, they work fine with my Sky box but are not Wifi.
I will need the setup for about a month this summer so do not want to spend £50 or so on Wifi ones. I have a couple of old modems from Talk Talk.
That cable will not plug into my Macbook which has thunderbolt2 ports, or the iPads we use and you need to plug in to reset those routers, I was hoping for a plug in and go Wifi transmitter.
A Wifi extender is no good as we will be out of range, about 300M but still connected to the same electric distribution board.

Sorry but once again I ask how do I configure the router???? I have tried to do it on an old Sky router but cannot get into any settings.
Remember I can only use wifi to do this?
I am bidding on an adaptor as that seems the easiest route.

NO YOU CAN'T ONLY USE WIFI TO DO THIS!

If you have a laptop with an Ethernet port ... USE THE ETHERNET PORT!

All the instructions you need are linked in post #8

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php shows how to access the GUI for umpteen routers. You'll need to navigate to the correct settings page yourself as that guide is all about getting ADSL line stats.

You need to be connected to the router to do that so if you have WiFi only you'll need to connect your device WiFi to the router WiFi you want to configure.

As you need to disable DHCP on it you won't be able to easily reconnect to that router once that is done do make sure you set up the WiFi on it first. As you will probably want it to have the same SSID as your current WiFi you should probably turn your current router off while setting it up or you could end up connecting to that one once the SSID is changed.

If you do screw anything up you'll need to factory reset it and start over.

You'd probably do better waiting til you get the ability to connect by ethernet while silently cursing Apple for omitting an industry standard connector.

After all that hope it works OK and wonder why you put youself to all that trouble when a purpose built AP only costs a few quid.

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Thanks at last someone isn't telling me to configure he router using a PC I do not have. Will wait for the thunderbolt adaptor to arrive and follow the instructions. One problem is that I do not yet know the IP address as there is no internet there yet but will try it from here just to see if I can do it.
Oh and just to say I have a Macbook as I do work for my son who only uses Macs in his design and print business.
