Wifi transmitter?

I have a pair of homeplugs to give internet away from wifi range.
Can I plug something in to replace the computer ethernet cable and give wifi instead?
I know I can buy wifi homeplugs but the aren't cheap!

I haven't used homeplugs myself, so I'm not 100% sure how they work. But, if you have a spare wireless router, you could probably connect it via the homeplugs as a secondary wireless access point.

There are cheap ones on eBay:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NETGEAR-N150-150-Mbps-10-100-Wireless-G-Router-WNR1000-/301960436109?hash=item464e3e998d:g:ItUAAOSwcl1XPNJt

And you'd need a wireless adapter for your PC if it doesn't have one.

Where is this ethernet cable of which you speak? Between a PC/laptop and the homeplug at the opposite end from the router?
A wireless access point homeplug works very well in my experience and, yes, it does cost £several.

just use a basic wifi access point at the far end of the homeplugs - been using one in the office for years :)

Yes simply connect an old router to your remote homeplug and use it as an access point.

There are may articles on the net showing how to easily do this e.g. here

Most people have a spare unused router but even buying a second hand one will be cheaper than a purpose built access point and this is MSE.

IF the spare router takes an ethernet input - a lot of them don't..

That's good then because it is not required and you would know that if you had read the article before commenting.
Do not use the WAN port, which is sometimes labeled Internet.

A domestic router without Ethernet ports...? Do they really exist?!

Eh? How can you possibly connect an Ethernet-only homeplug to a device that doesn't have Ethernet ports?!
