Free Gas Boiler Help Please...

Hi there, I was wondering if any of you knowledgeable folks can help me? I have an Ideal boiler which is 10 yrs old now and has been condemned as unsafe by the engineer from the insurance company. The insurance company have concluded that the boiler is not financially viable to repair. I originally received a grant from warm front for the boiler. I have tried to apply for a free boiler but I have been told that as it is an A-rated model it cannot be replaced with a grant. I am very worried as the boiler I have is unsafe. I receive DLA, IS and Severe disablement allowance and I'm unable to work. Can anyone please give me any advice? Thank you for reading this post.... dead_maus.

Please post the name of the company the engineer is employed by, also did he put an unsafe label on the boiler and cut off the gas ?

Hi there, the engineer worked for Npower as they insured the boiler. The engineer turned the boiler off and put warning label on the front but didn't turn the gas off. I am currently using the boiler but feel very frightened to do so. Also when the insurance company called me they had cancelled my direct debt for my insurance premiums of £16.50 per month. The engineer also informed me that if it is not repaired it will cause extensive damage as it is leaking. Apparently the heat engine is damaged and the seals are damaged to. Hope that helps...

Do you own the property? Presumably.

What advice are you seeking, exactly?
(other than attempting to get something for nothing)

If you have no savings at all, but all your money is tied up in an expensive property ... perhaps you need to consider if you really can afford to own such a property. What will happen when you get another unexpected expense to meet?

I suggest you go and make an appointment with your local CAB (or other debt charity) and go through your income & expenditures and take it from there.

There may be other options such as re-mortgaging, equity release, etc to consider, but that is not something you should decide based on comments by annonymous users on the internet.

What does the warning label actually say?
Perhaps you could post an image of it please?

Thank you for your advice. The label reads "danger " and is ticked "at risk"...

    Really? Ticked, you say?

I would really like to see an image please.

You see, this is an example of the usual type of warning label that should be applied in the situation you describe.

You may instead be referring to the warning advisory record you would also have been provided with, and presumably signed to accept, so you should know where you stand.
(but that doesn't have the word 'danger' on it either )

Thanks for posting the image - I've never seen a label like that before.

However, it does in essence say the same thing
i.e. "This appliance is unsafe and must not be used"

Therefore I can only advise you to stop using the appliance until such times as a GSR engineer advises otherwise.

I would advise you contact a local GSR engineer asap and seek a second opinion. I'm not confident such second opinion will change the situation (especially as the indications are that the heat exchanger is defective, and that is usually terminal), but at least it will also give you an opportunity to obtain a more reasonable quote for a replacement boiler.

Once you get a better idea of what it should actually cost to replace, then you will be on a firmer foot as to investigate how you should then fund it.

    :)
