My mum got salmonella in Dubai, confirmed by her doctor, she was incredibly ill for about 10 days. It's just one of these things, she didn't go looking for 'compensation' because she's a grown up.

I got ill in Egypt too. My last meal in the hotel - kicked in on the flight home. A week off work and 3-4 weeks of not being 100%.

It's one of those things you half expect if you travel to other countries where the standards are generally less stringent than in the UK.

Every time people claim compensation, it puts up the cost of holidays for everyone else. If you're not prepared to take the risk, stay home, never eat out and cook everything yourself.

    Nope.
Holidays don't have fixed or capped prices and they have no relation to actual costs.

  • I appreciate there is a certain risk in visiting other countries. The confusing thing however is that I ate "Street food" in Thailand for 2 weeks with no illness. I ate hot dogs etc from carts in new York and wasn't ill. I think just it's very unfair to say you should expect some symptoms because after all it was EGYPT. Both trips my husband was "pretty much" okay, but then again we did not eat the same meal each day.

Regarding the logging in the pool unless you were poolside on that particular day....you wouldn't have known as a number or TripAdvisor reviews over that period and also compensation articles from Other travellers show the pools were opened a short while after each issue. Unfortunately as a resort aimed at children it was bound to happen at some point. In my defense there was 3 pools and a beach but as I said unless you physically seen the pool closed you wouldn't have known any different as it was opened an hour after.

I think the most annoying thing was I became sick half way through my holiday, came home with it and endured it for another 2 weeks and took more time off work because of that.

Street food in Thailand and other places is often a sensible choice as it's freshly cooked, not sitting around exposed to germs.

In Egypt they dent serve their food piping hot, it's just not how they do it. This alone is something different to what your body may be used to and it may react badly. If it's not food poisoning you're wasting your time, it's just the body reacting to things it's not used to ingesting, which could be as simple as different minerals being present in water and contamination of hands from door handles, money etc.

You say you used to pool, how many times do you hear people say 'I have a dodgy tummy today, think I will just stay by the pool'
They are touching beds, tables etc. We have been to Egypt about 15 times, never use the pools, the reason we go is for the Red Sea, never have been ill, have ice, eat salad perhaps we have just been lucky......

I was really ill in Egypt. My lips were very dry and I realised that I'd touched my mouth while on the camel ride.

Early hours of next morning I knew about it!

    My fault!

It's wise to take all the necessary care and precautions, but if you're unlucky an unnoticed fly will alight on your meal for a moment, that can be all it takes.

As others have said, problems usually occur when we are not familiar with and immune to the strange local microorganisms and substances, as much as the results of poor hygiene. The local population rarely have any problem, just as we don't in our home environment.

Severe food hygiene hazards are ever present in Afghanistan and I suffered occasional bouts of dysentery while living there at first, but after a couple of years I became able to eat and drink anything anywhere with impunity. Then one day I flew to Vancouver BC and a colleague who picked me up at the airport took me to a White Spot for a delicious hamburger. A few hours later it hit me, I was sick as a dog for days!

Then why did you book to stay there?

It's beyond belief! A known reputation for stools in the pools.

Yes; no company budgets to deliberately make a loss.
A sum to cover compo claims will go into the cost budget, which drives the prices charged.
If the annual compo bill goes up this will be reflected in next year's prices.
