I think that it is safe to assume that it is the bankruptcy / state of credit file which is causing your son problems in opening a bank account and not the fact that he has a criminal conviction / been to prison. The banks should not be aware of his criminal conviction.
Just why your son chose bankruptcy as the way of dealing with his former girlfriends misuse of the POA's is unclear. The POA's were clearly not given for the purpose of her taking out credit agreements in his name and I am surprised that any lender would have granted credit under such circumstances. When she did this, why did you/he not seek advice from the solicitor who arranged the POA's? She must have committed some sort of fraud in the information given to the lenders. Why did he choose bankruptcy .... why not simply let the accounts default? Even if the DCA's had gone as far as to obtain CCJ's, there is very little that they could have done to recover the money while he was in prison.
With regard to insurers being aware of his conviction, could he possibly have been sent to prison as a result of a motoring offence which has been advised to the DVLA as the sentence included a driving ban/penalty points in addition to the custodial sentence?0 -
No motoring offence. He contacted his solicitor and she said that as his girlfriend had PoA there was nothing she could do and he would leave prison owing the money. She was the one who advised bankruptcy.I prefer rogues to imbeciles, they sometimes take a rest (Alexander Dumas)0

CIFAS markers can exist for all sorts of reasons, and they aren't necessarily linked to an offence that can lead to a prison sentence. One good reason could be that contracts were taken out in your son's name that were not honoured - - - which is precisely what you said did happen. His girlfriend could also have done, or tried to do, all sorts of other untoward things whilst she had the POA.

But as I said, it could also be that your son is still financially linked with her on his credit file, and that it is her who has the issues. Your son really does need to look at his credit files.
Nothing more I can add now to this discussion but please let us know how you / your son could resolve the matter.0 -

As others have suggested the bankruptcy could be the issue, but the lack of address history ( or the history) could also be a factor.
I wish you luck, maybe worth waiting a while if you have tried and failed to open four or more accounts in quick succession.
Definitely check if your son is still linked to the ex girlfriend as it could be her record that is causing the issues, if there is still a financial link, that said the POA issue may have caused historical negative footprint for failed payments that is also contributing.
Ben8282, A POA can operate the donor account like they would their own accounts and this means opening new lines of credit and accounts, changing products and reinvesting.
They (lender) don't know the circumstances of why the POA has been granted only that it has been registered.
No fraud has taken place, in that respect that said the girlfriend sounds like she knew what she was doing, and the reprocessions it would create.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Banking & Borrowing, and Reduce Debt & Boost Income boards. The going to prison is a massive red herring.
Banks cannot see this, as others say it'll be down to his credit file.
If you want help in the nicest possible way don't drip feed information, the bankruptcy is a a much bigger issue! The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0 -
If he's bankrupt currently, I know of no bank that will take him on.0
