I think the cloud print option is going to be better than email support as then there is no risk of spam arriving. I took a look via the link and was surprised to find I had already added my printer but forgotten about the service as I have no real use for it. Either that or google is even more knowledgeable about me than even I expected.

    That's s really good point.

Does anyone have experience of these printers with email addresses that require a password (or some other prompt) to actually print.

With the HP printer, you can say up "whitelist"( none except these email addresses) or "blacklist" (all except these email addresses) for each printer.

I know some people can be that way about new technology and ideas until they find a use for it.

My partner desperately needed a document printed out from my computer but she has no idea of how to use my computer (several layers of security). At the time I just so happened to be in Cyprus on business and while I could have talked my partner through how to get at the document it was easier and quicker for me to access my cloud storage and email the document to my printer.

Secondly my partner uses a Blackberry playbook which does not have a driver for my printer but she can email a document from the Playbook to the printer.

No, it's not new technology at all, it's a dirty great bodge, it's saying "people are too stupid".
It's like companies that turn their 5000 page online product catalogue into a "flip book" where you have to grab each page with the mouse. I know lets fit a rotary pulse dialler onto the back of a smart phone!!!!!

From a commercial point of view it's pandering to idiocy in order to make money, but it's not really fixing a problem.

  • I have a HP Envy 4507 wireless printer.

My Hudl prints through my WiFi connection.

It does require me to email a document to either a PC, or the printer, and the file type of the item doesn't matter.

Whatever is on the active screen of my Hudl , gets printed.

Maybe the idiots are those that fail to see that, despite examples, it can be very useful feature. it certainly solves a problem in my household. I think you are trying to sound smart, but are failing.

I don't see why you would need a password for a printers email address. Just don't give out the email to anyone and then you won't get people spamming it wasting your ink!.

As another poster said it uses white and black lists for protection to stop malicious use

Mine doesn't!. I have activated the print by email function but never bothered putting anything into the white list of black list. I've only used it once to try it but have never had any spam printing because nobody outside my household knows the address!
  • HP Envy 5640 wifi printer with Instant Ink subscription is the best thing I ever did w.r.t. home printing. I pay £3.99/month for 100 pages (plus one month rollover for any unused) and the ink is mailed automatically whenever the printer detects it is running low. I like that it is totally fuss free and low price.

I can't remember exactly how i set mine up, but probably some option on the site. I think it is a good idea to set up a white list, although i am not sure how a spammer could know that they have a valid printer email address
