I'm early 50s and the battle is getting harder. For last couple of years my hairdressers does my roots in my natural colour (darkish brown) as grey is main in front of hair and then every other month puts a few bleach foils in to hide regrowth. She kept some of my hair when she cut it and bleached up with different timings to see which colour blended best. I'm thinking of asking for more foils now to lighten hair more and working up to letting the grey in!

I still have very greasy hair and it needs washing daily but a tip from my DD was to dry shampoo before bed and I wake up grease free. Now I can just my hair every 2 -3 days and colours last longer. Tresseme colour condition is very good for keeping hair soft.

No way am I embracing the grey, OP if you want to avoid the roots being so obvious visit a hairdresser and have some colours put in your hair. Yes you will need to go lighter in parts but with warmer colours, I have lighter colours close to the roots and they disguise the grey for a while longer. But it's not cheap.

I'm looking for some advice/tips please and hopefully from someone who is in the same position as me.

I started going grey late teens/early twenties and easily covered up my dark brown hair with hair dyes. I am 36 now and when I dye my hair I get about a week before my scalp has silvery regrowth all over. I cant colour my hair every two weeks and I cannot disguise the grey any more! My current situation is about two weeks after dyeing I will use a root retouch and then try and get another three weeks out of that before I dye all over again.

As a result of all this treatment my hair is so frazzled and dry and frizzy and am at the end of my tether with it!

Anyone have any advice or tips as this is really getting me down and I am not ready to go grey yet.

I'm in the same situation. I've been dyeing my hair with Naturtint permanent hair dye for the last few years. To be honest it doesn't last long on my hair, but I do wash it every day. It definitely doesn't dry my hair out though. In fact the condition is often feels better after it's been dyed. Could be a possibility to help the condition of your hair if not the need for regular dyeing?

I've got some Daniel Field watercolour hair dye that I bought and still need to use. I was hoping that might last a bit longer...can only try.

    I feel your pain!

One tip I discovered is to use a brunette dry shampoo to give me an extra week or two between dying it. Similar to the above posters suggestion of root powders, but a fraction of the price.

I use the Superdrug one. It's £1.99 a can, usually on offer BOGOF or half price.

    Cheap but effective.

Can I just thank you for this tip, which is one of the best I have got from this board!
I bought this can (which was indeed on a BOGOF offer) and have found it very effective and easy to use. I, and my hair, thank you! :):)

Well I have tried quite a few things since I posted this and found that the John Frieda root blur worked very well and allowed me to get another two weeks before I put a colour in. Its quite small but goes a long way. Also a bit pricey. It seems to be the only thing that stops me reaching for the dye before I should!!

I find the dry shampoo too dusty in my hair and the spray root touch ups to be a little sticky and a little messy. The root blur is like a little eyeshadow that you brush onto your roots and I was pretty impressed that it covered the grey and stayed put until I next washed my hair - a temporary measure in the fight against grey but a fight I am not willing to give into yet!

thanks for this information, i have the same problem but have pure white hairs to cover, naturally dark brown, so very obvious. i am having to redo the roots every couple of weeks now with a permanent and wonder if there is a semi permanent or demi that covers white hairs, as i am worried about the damage this is doing to my hair.
my husband keeps seeing the ads for 'just for men' wash in and out in 5 minutes and says why don't i just get that. anyone ever tried that on whites?!!!!!!!!

I have white roots and I paint mine using a stippling action to apply a W7 cover up product I bought off EBay . I think it cost £3.50 andi get a bit longer before I dye my roots.

thank you, that product is quite cheap, does it stay on your hair until the next wash or does it brush out?

I'd be interested to know how old the posters who are 'embracing' grey are?

I'm mid 40's, naturally dark brown hair but been dying it for about 10 years to cover the grey. It is getting to the point where I need to dye it every 3 weeks :(. (Always dye it myself as I can't afford salon prices).

I wash my shoulder length hair and use conditioner every day, as I don't feel clean if I don't, and I swim a lot which strips the dye out and lightens my hair colour..but it doesn't hide the grey and I hate it..I like having dark brown hair:o

So how old were you all when you 'embraced' being grey. I'm not averse to it, I just like having dark hair and it suits me far better than any time I've gone lighter!!
