Hi Guys,
Thanks for the tip about the cake drying out in the fridge - it's been in the fridge all bl00dy afternoon - I put it in there paranoid that the ganache would go off and it's not even meant to be there!!! whoops
The verdict in my house is that it is very rich with a slightly bitter taste - so next time I am going to stick to the instructions and not go higher on the cocoa percentage of chocolate.
Anyway, I am starting to feel slightly sick now...
P.S What do people think about mixing 100g of milk chocolate with 100g of dark chocolate next time or do you think that would disort the taste!!!0 -
I have done that, or even mixed in some white chocolate as well when I didn't have enough for the recipe. It worked out fine, just a more mellow taste but still dark chocolatey IYKWIM!Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...:D:D

i once used a mix of dark choc and cadburys milk choc for a chocolate fudge cake i made. it was the best thing i have ever tasted! also mine had to stay in the fridge but i took it out an hour before it was eaten so it warmed up to room temp.
might have to make your cake, dd thought it looked really nice and i still owe her a birthday cake!!! :P0 -
One of my fave chocolates to use for a cake is Tesco basic eating chocolate in the white wrapper with the orange graphics, it's about 30p or something like that for a bar, but perfectly good for cakes (or one for the cake......one for the cook!). Also good in the chocolate from Aldi and their Master Roth orange and dark chocolate makes a fabulous chocolate orange cake. The chocolate from Lidl and Aldi is also pretty good - and you can get a fairtrade version (which always makes it taste sweeter!). The other thing I've done is use Maya Gold (reduced to £1 a bar in Somerfields at the moment), mixed with ordinary dark - it gives a kind of spicy taste that's really nice. Great for brownies as well.0

I've made my first ever chocolate cake today - I am quite simply useless in the kitchen and am trying to now become Delia Smith:D
Anyway, this is what I made if anyone wants to try - it's pretty easy http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/3092/ultimate-chocolate-cake
Well done :T I'll add this to the existing thread on chocolate cakes to keep recipes together.

I've been asked for my chocolate cake recipe - this is the one I use, often substituting butter cream for the ganache:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0

that can be made in under 40 mins!!
Its for my son who is making a chocolate cake at school on Friday. The lesson is 40 mins long. They can cook what they want and chocolate cake is what he has chosen. He has already made a sponge cake, brownies and chocolate cookies.Sealed Pot Challenge member #982
