thanks Le-Kirk, I followed through your link and after fiddling about a bit I managed to find system restore, as there was no 'recovery' option on control panel.
system restore was off, so I had to create a restore point, and hey presto it worked.
I now have my favourites and bookmarks back.
do you have any idea as to what the cause might have been ,
could it be because i.e. 11 installed itself ?

anyway , thanks again , problem solved, just hope it doesn't happen again
