Noticed that DD payment for May went out on 3rd may.
Planning to sell car before end of the month, or declare it SORN and stick it on driveway until its sold.
So I cancelled the DD, thinking well I've paid up until end of May, just before end of May I'll do SORN.
BUT, then I get an email telling me because DD is cancelled the road tax is cancelled immediately. Strange since I've paid for May already.
So I think ok go back in and set up again just in case. BUT now first payment 3rd June £40, 3rd July £20. So it looks like I have to pay for May again now!
Bit off to cancel my tax just because I cancelled the DD after that month is paid for!

It's possibly because like insurance it's the fee for a year broken down to instalments. I traded my car in for a different one a few months back, did it by the book and never had any problems, the DVLA stopped taking the money, didn't need monthly payments for the new car as its only £20 a year.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0

You haven't paid for May twice, if you cancel after the beginning of the month, you lose that months money, if you tax a car after the beginning of the month you have to pay from the start of that month, it's always been that way. Technically you cancelled your tax then re taxed the vehicle after being informed that your vehicle was no longer taxed.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -
How did they know you had cancelled the DD?
Has the bank tried to re-claim the payment made at the beginning of the month.0 -

No thats whats strange. The payment for may came out on may 3rd. The next one was due june 3rd.
When they heard I'd cancelled DD they cancellled the tax. Bit off since I'd paid for may so they should have left it until the end of the month not half way through!0 -
From the Website, looks like you should have SORNED it first and let them do the cancelling rather than the pre-emptive strike.Cancel vehicle tax and get a refund
You usually don’t need to do anything extra to cancel your vehicle tax and get a refund for any full months of tax remaining.
When vehicle tax is cancelled
Your vehicle tax is cancelled and you automatically get a refund when you tell DVLA that your vehicle has been:- sold or transferred
- taken off the road and you’ve made a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification)
- scrapped at an authorised treatment facility
- exported
- changed so it’s exempt from vehicle tax
What happens next
You’ll get a refund cheque for any full months remaining on your vehicle tax. Contact DVLA if you haven’t got it after 6 weeks.
The cheque will be sent to the name and address on the V5C registration document (log book).
Your vehicle tax Direct Debit (if you have one) will be cancelled automatically.
If you made a single 6-month payment for your vehicle tax, you’ll have paid an extra charge at the time. The extra charge isn’t refunded.0 -

How did the OP cancel tax by stopping the DD.
nothing in your post about stopping DD0 -
I'll edit your post:
Q. How did the OP cancel tax?
A. by stopping the DD.
I'm not defending it but that is clearly what happened.0 -

No. What I did was:-
1. Waited until the DD for may had been paid.
2. Then cancelled the DD
3. Planned to sorn at end of may.
OK I was too quick cancelling the DD.
Phoned DVLA today and explained and they said ok until the end of may dont worry. just cancel the other one.0 -
Do you have a recording of that? (Would you trust what someone there says without having recorded or written proof?)0
