Car Insurance-no claims bonus

I am 64 year old woman with full driving licence 40+years.
I have had my own car now for 15 years but been insured as named driver with my husband being the policy holder-originally done to save money.

The car policy is up for renewal with Saga. Previously when I asked about having the policy in my own name they said they would only transfer my husband's no claims bonus should he die or permanently cease driving.

Does anyone know if it is common policy for all insurers to do this? If we changed insurers and should anything happen to him is it likely if I were a named driver I could have his no claims?

My concern is that as I am getting older and have not built up any no claims of my own that I could face high premiums in the future if anything happened to my husband.

I have been a named driver for many years and also a named driver on his Mobility car-they never asked me anything about other vehicles but also would this be taken into consideration now or later with other insurers.

I am concerned that I have been main driver and vehicle owner for many years and haven't any no claims discount of my own.

Saga seem very expensive this time and it has prompted me to think about changing insurers but has raised the above questions in my mind.
Thank you.

Most insurers adopt the same stance as Saga (ie only swapping over NCD to the surviving spouse on the demise or incapacity of the policyholder)

Some brokers may allow you to transfer NCB with written permission from yur husband. Also, if you want to have your own policy, speak to a broker about 'mirroring' your husbands NCB to yourself. This acts as a sort of umbrella, where you get the discount of full NCB, and you get to earn your own underneath it, without paying extortionate prices.

TBH this sounds like a case of fronting, you are the main driver and owner, yet the car is insured by your husband with you as named driver not the main driver.

Is there any advantage for "fronting" in this age group? If a teenager is pretending his mother is the driver then the advantage is clear.

Why not just keep on doing what you are doing then when hubby does indeed pop his clogs, you can have his NCD.

If you pop your clogs first, then you wont need it.

Seems the MSE way to do it

Nothing to do with age, it all about getting cheaper insurance by stating the main driver is a named driver, which is exactly what the OP stated they did in their post.

Insurance companies don't take kindly to it.

When it is a married couple (or cohabiting) most insurance companies don't care about which one is listed as main driver in my experience.

The above is certainly true in my experience, which I'm happy to share.

When I first came to this country in 1977, I could not get insurance (I am from the US), but my British husband could, so I became a named driver. This continued for a long time, then eventually we became a two car family and both cars were insured in his name with me as named driver. This began to rankle as I selected, negotiated and paid for my car. I contacted the insurance company and mentioned "fronting" but they said they were extremely content to continue with the status quo. I think they did mention they would swop if my husband wrote and confirmed that the car had always been primarily driven by me. Anyway, a few years ago (2009) he got his first Motability car, so we removed his former car from the insuror and at that stage my car became insured in my name with husband as named driver and I got full NCD. My insuror is L:V. Since you mention you are named on your husband's Motabilty car your situation is the same as mine. In addition, Saga is always more expensive for me. Are either of you Civil Servants or retired Civil Servants? We get a reduction because of this (husband is a retired CS).

Hi, I was insured with LV approx 3 years ago with my wife as a named driver. I had 8 years NCD & my wife had been a named driver for 2 years without incident. There had been a claim prior to this.

When my wife purchased her own car I asked LV if they would give her 2 years NCD, they said they would mirror my NCD.

This resulted in a great saving when insuring the 2nd car.
  • Hi,
I was wondering if you have received any responses to your post?
My query is slightly different, but perhaps the insurance companies you have dealt with might help...
I am currently insured on my father’s policy and have been for the last 6 years. He had 12 years no claims on his policy.
Sadly, he passed away 2 weeks ago, before he passed away he checked with a number of insurers and advised me that the no-claims would be transferable to me.
I confirmed with my current insurer and they would produce the documentation if I choose another insurer. My current insurer has quoted me double the price of the original policy.
If you have any advice that would be great.
    Thank you.
