it is not surprising the quote is higher. Your father would have had x years driving licence and been within a certain age group. Premium would have been £x that was discounted by NCD
Your number of years driving experience and age group may well have you in a higher premium so even with the same % discount it would be higher
Out of interest have you held your licence for 12 years+? I just wonder how another insurer would view the transferred NCD if it was for longer than you had held a licence

We have had at least two cars since I learned to drive, but some years ago ,I remember that when one car was bought my husband insured that with me as first driver (he was first on the other) so I would have a no claims bonus of my own .

I think there was a change about that time, which then required you to have a separate no claims for each person. We used a broker and they did me a special bonus of a couple of years no claims, as I had driven for a number of years with no accidents or claims (as second named driver).
