I s it better to purchase via credit card goods in euros or sterling please?

    I'm not sure I understand the question.

    If you buy something using your credit card in Greece you'll be charged in euros and it will be converted to sterling when you get your c/c bill.

    If the merchant gives you the choice, it is better to pay in euros and let your card do the conversion. Otherwise the merchant can use an unfavourable (for you) exchange rate to convert your pounds.

    Of course, if you don't have a suitable card for travel, the difference will be less. See:

    If you ask for Sterling they use their own conversion rate which is usually 4-5% worse than the Mastercard or Visa rate.

    Check out the links in eDicky's post for the best and worst cards - you'd need a very bad one to end up paying more than the shops conversion. If you have, or can get, a card that is good for ATM withdrawals this will be much more flexible than just a 'purchases card'.

    sometimes they ask euros or sterling.

    And the really naughty ones don't even ask. They put it through in Sterling at a rate of their choice and hope you don't notice.
