is legal cover for car insurance worth it?

I'm faced with renewing my car insurance policy this week and legal cover is extra, at circa £28. Is it worth having? The insurance provider indicates that it'll be used if and only I'm in an accident that wasn't my fault and they are sure that they can win. The advise that otherwise up to 25% of any payout would be taken as payment by a solicitor. It seems thus to me to be worth not taking the legal cover.
Thoughts welcome, ta.

I'd say "yes"...I'm a broker, my husbands policy does not have Motor ULR built in; I've made sure he has this add on.0

I would say yes, several years ago a vehicle I had was hit by someone in an old Land Rover who drove out of a side road into mine and wrote mine off, I had three independent witnesses one a pedestrian who gave statements and all said it was the other persons fault as he drove out at speed and without looking, his insurance tried to settle 50/50 and refused to pay for a hire car.
I had legal protection and it went as far as going to court and a Barrister was hired, three days before the hearing his insurance company backed down and agreed to settle my claim in full including the hire car.0 -
In #2 the "advice" by an insurance broker is to buy a policy and also buy one for every driver in the family (though what else would a broker advise?)
Then Onan (in the deleted post) advised that we shouldn't buy a policy at all, but go and take out a "free" policy! (Onan deciding not to tell us his own interest, though revealing the broker in #2 makes an enormous profit)
(Onan does have a massive interest but today chose not to reveal it!)
The "free" policy has been mentioned on MSE a number of times and no one has a good word for it except the guy that owns the outfit that offers it.0 -
So Quentin, once you have taken your self-appointed forum prefect/ milk monitor hat off, what would your recommendation to the original poster be?
1- Buy a policy?
2- Don't bother but lose 25% of your damages to a No win no fee lawyer for an injury claim and/or have nobody to fight for recovery of non-PI small claim losses?
3- None of the above?
4- An alternative?
Put some useful contribution forwards for god's sake!
Incidentally, my suggestion of doing a google search for motor legal protection reveals a range of both paid for products as well as a free product. It's a bit like an insurance broker saying do a search for motor insurer and you then accusing them of promotion. Get a life man!
On your final point, "nobody has a good word to say for it".... clearly not the case, but it seems that whenever the company in question does get mentioned, it is either you, R65 and/or Forgotmyname (or all 3 of you) who chime in with the usual copy & paste vitriol and any other comments are stifled.
Due to post count totals for you and the other posters mentioned, people may actually believe you know what you are on about, which is a shame and rather misleading.
Awaits retort......0 -

The only good words in all the posts in those threads do come from yourself or your alter ego.0 -
As i said, criticism from 3 posters in most threads which stifles any debate and the replies from the company concerned can't be made as it either ends in self promotion if attempts are made to explain how the system works or it just looks ridiculous with a company rep exchanging tit for tat with some armchair experts.
Would you ever consider a rational debate about your misgivings and concerns?0 -
For motor, I would say no, as most things you would want can be covered by no-win no-fee agreements.
I would certainly take it with my home insurance though.0 -
But do you realise that with a no win no fee lawyer you will lose 25% of your compensation if you had an injury claim and nobody will help you with non injury uninsured loss recovery without legal cover or some other before the event provision such as union membership etc.
Just saying0 -
Yes - I would have that before a courtesy car. I can tell you have never had to sort out a disputed claim!!0

When you put it that way, £28 sounds good value. You must accept that your free offering isn't a substitute for an insured product that brings other benefits.
I see you have changed your website to say your offering is an alternative - you no longer say that it provides all the same functions.0
